So, I have two boys in one cage, and they insist on peeing in their own spots. ChickaChickah in one corner, Charley right in front of the lower door. How do I place a litter pan so it's not too much in the way, but so that they'll still use it instead? They're driving me crazy!!! :hair:

I only have one chin, but I placed the litter pan in the spot where she was peeing. I placed litter in the pan, as well as soiled bedding. I blocked other corners of the cage to deter her from going there. I am not an expert, but you may have to start with two litter pans and place them where each chin goes potty, even if for now it is in the doorway. When they both get used to the idea of the pan, you could try removing the one in front of the door and leaving just one litter pan for the two to use.

Good luck. I know some chins won't use the litter pans, but I got lucky and my chin got the idea quickly.

Yeah, I'd start off with two pans in the areas where they pee, put some new bedding in there along with dirty bedding. Then if they do start peeing in those areas you might be able to condense it down to one pan by blocking off the areas where they used to pee.

But not all chins will use a litter pan exclusively. Only one of my girls does. The other 4 although they tend to use their litter pan, they do pee outside of it as well.

When I first switched to fleece & started using a pee pan, I made it a point to take some of the peed-on bedding and mix it in with the aspen I was switching to, and put that in the litter pan. That way, when all the bedding they were used to disappeared, there was still some, still smelling of pee, in what I hoped to be their new intended target. Worked like a charm for me. :D

I haven't even bothered to litter train the chins. They'll go where they want to go, but to those who can, power to ya! Just remember that for the most part (or at least for most of the chin owners I've heard of), chins aren't litter trainable. Good luck though.

When i first started potty training, i put carefresh bedding over the whole floor. Then i took some of the pee'd on litter and put into a potty bowl. Now, you could just start right out with the potty bowl--try to put their pee in there. I would shoot for the back corner -the one chin's peeing. They all seem to want to pee in the back corner. I now do a potty pad liner in the corner and they go on that. All 3 of mine are potty trained in their cages, as well as their playroom. I also did "alot" of praising when they went in the potty bowl. I believe that may have helped. It was pretty easy. And, if there's an accident-clean it up real, real good so they don't smell it. Stay consistent and hopefully it'll work easily! Good luck.

I don't consider chinchillas litter trainable, It is more the owner being trained to put the pan in the right spot..either way I don't bother with it. I just clean the whole cage (cages) 2 times a week

I use a metal pan. Mine happens to be circular, but a square metal pan would fit nicely into a corner spot.
