Hello,

We have three chins and I am looking at potty training them and we have covered all corners of the cages however they just wee where they want. We have a toilet in their favourite corner and have put their wee stuff in there to try and get them to wee in it however sometimes they do and sometimes they don't.

Does anyone have any tips for potty training them?

On another note I have noticed that on two of my chins they have poop strains around their furry little bums and we have given them dust baths every day for weeks but its not shifting does anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of it as I don't want anything to happy to them because of it such as infections etc.

Could the sand be the wrong sand for them? What sand recommendations do you guys have?

James

As far as the poop stains, (could also possibly be pee stains from sitting in pee) you can try an unscented baby white.

I believe putting corn starch or baking soda in the dust bath can help too. I can't remember which off the top of my head so hopefully someone else chimes in here.

Some chins can be potty trained while others can't. I have a trio where 1 uses the litter pan and the other 2 play in it. Just keep trying what you are doing.

Have you put dirty litter in the litter pan then put in the corner they pee in most often?

Thanks for the reply!

I will see what I can find in the house if I don't have any I am off down the shops! I will hold off on that one then until we get a definitive answer :)

Yes that's what I always do when cleaning them out put some of their dirty stuff in their places to pee and see what happens sometimes they use it sometimes they don't. I am sure one day they will make me a proud daddy lol

I don't really have any experience in potty training a chinchilla. Not sure why they would have stains on their fur from using the toilet. I would try a unscented baby wipe as ****oo said from above. Are you sure their poo is normal?

And I would try to clean your chinchillas toilet quite regularly as well. Every day - Every other day. Depends what you use in the toilet. You shouldn't really let it go too long, it would be very unhealthy for your chinchillas to walk in it/breathe it in.

Thanks to both of you. they get their litter cleaned out daily and also when they wee in other places the tray is under the cage wire so they cant sit in it. It looks like it's poop coloured though but I will see if I can clean it up and see what happens.

What sand recommendations do you guys have? I have heard good things about sepiolite and I am wondering what your views on this are? We currently use Quartz sand.

Thanks Again

James

We also have Degu's and Gerbils and would like to use the sand for them all to save on cost and also not having two lots of sand / dust in the house to keep track of. What dust do you recommend as we can possibly get hold of it here.

Do you have any thoughts on sepiolite?

James
