Here are a few pics of my rats. I started breeding rats almost a year ago-it's been interesting. The genetics of rats are so much more difficult than I imagined them to be. Anyhow, here are Latte, CoCo, and Fuzzy. Fuzzy is a black hairless female. CoCo is a mink male and Latte, his brother, is a havana odd eye. All are dumbos.

Aww they're adorable!! I don't know what I'd do without my ratties! Plus I love watching the babies grow up and play with eachother.

I love rats, but I still have to work on the hairless ones...I've seen some that are really cute-yours is cute...but I've seen some that scare the pants off me lol...

says the girl who thinks hairless dogs are cute...maybe it just depends on the rat.

Are rats harder genetically than chins???

Adorable! I love rats and would love to have a couple girls around again, but they just don't live long enough.

My sister is going to get my niece a couple of girls for her first pets. They live by the freeway, so a dog is not a good idea and my brother-in-law is allergic to cats, so ratties won! My niece will be five in June and is going to have a baby brother born in May so it will be a while before they're ready to add ratties to the family, but I can't wait until I get to be a rat auntie!

Jessica,

Your ratties are cute! It doesn't seem right you would find something without hair cute, but yet you do! They do look like they have great personalities.

I love ratties! I'm particularly smitten with Fuzzy. I wish I could have my own ratties here, but they're illegal... stupid Alberta.

So how do they compare to chinchillas as far as personalities and affection go? I'm lucky for a chin owner in that I have one that's pretty cuddly and another that's super curious, so I can handle them both easily. I've also got a fancy mouse that's pretty sweet-natured (luckily, since he was a discarded feeder). I've never lived with rats, but I hear such great things about them (and they are pretty cute, though the hairless ones would need to grow on me a little, I think).

*has a thing for critters with teeny tiny little hand-paws* :heart3:

Wow, illegal to own a rat? That seems odd. Why was that rule passed?

I had rats for a few years, and had such a hard time with the lifespan. My last rat was put down at just about 2 years old. Spanky, a little hairless boy.

I'd have them again someday. I miss their dog-like personalities. Great pets, but hard to transition from chins due to the lifespan.

I don't think I had ever heard of hairless rats. They are cute but I think I have a preference for any animal with fur over those without. Poor guys without look like they need a sweater! :)

Rats are outlawed in Alberta. Apparently Saskatchewan is considering a similar ban. The concern is over rats escaping, propagating, and contaminating/destroying field crops. When the province is one giant farm, it's a real concern (though I think a tad bit paranoid. just a tad...). Many Albertans are in favor of the ban so it's not likely to be lifted, sadly.

I used to have a few rats whom were so amazing. They absolutely loved curling up in the pocket of my sweatshirt and falling asleep.:heart3:

Your rats are very beautiful. I bet your very proud of them:thumbsup:

I too have a rat, but can hardly do much with her because I break out in hives all over...UGH:hair:
I just recently made her a ton of fleece stuff. She lives in a Chinchilla mansion all alone...my friend never got her a friend so now she wont accept one. I made her a triple hammock, a hanging tube and covers for all of her tunnels and such...along with fleece blankets.

As far as personalities go, I'd like you to take a dog and shrink it down to less than a pound...then you'll have a rat. They are SUPER intelligent and affectionate. When I could handle it a little better she used to ride all over the house with me...on my shoulder, in my pockets, in my hood, etc. but over time I started to become more and more allergic (I don't know what my **** problem is, but I'm becoming more allergic to things...especially hay...UGH). I can tell you right now, if I wasn't allergic to rats, I'd have lots more. Lucy, my rat, she is a year and half and is a healthy healthy girl. So far so good. I will arrange everything perfectly (in my opinion) in her cage and I'll come back and its a complete mess...although the other day I DID make sense of it. It went like this:
On her top shelf she threw her igloo down to the top level and wedged it in the ramp to make a slide...yes, you heard me...she made herself a slide! Now...it gets better...in order to get into this slide she took her tunnel that was covered in fleece and chewed open a hole in the side of it. She would go in through the front hole, out through the side hole, slide down her igloo and be on the second level
She's a genius I tell ya...

p.s. Coco is my favorite!

Cute ratties!

I love the nekkid kids the most!

As for pet quality, besides the short lifespan ...they are AWESOME!! They are clean, they are super smart, they interact ..like they can read their human and respond to them... and they can learn to come when called, do littlle tricks, and so on. I always think of them as "little dogs".

Boys are more likely to be big ol' squishes that just want to lounge and be loved on. Girls hardly ever grow out of the "baby energy" ...and they popcorn and bounce through life, pretty much! They are never still.. always on the go ..always doing something! LOL
