And see I thought Black velvets were this illusive, illustrious, rarity that you had to go to a breeder to find. Has to be reginal. Maybe thats because I had never seen or heard of them untill I came here. Le sigh!

The Petsmart in our area has primarily standards, but I've seen black velvets, beiges, and I think a pink white once. The standards are around $150, and if they realize they have other colors, those are bumped up another $20 or so. At least they're kept somewhat humanely there - large ventilated enclosure with some wooden houses and/or an igloo, sometimes with a dust bath, though the feed isn't the best.

The chain that called me said they only want standards because no one will pay a premium for the mutations.

In the bigger (petco, petsmart) stores around here - I see standards. There's a small mom & pop type of petstore by me and he recently got some mutations - he was so excited - a beige, a mosaic and *(as he had it advertised on the sign) an AFRICAN VIOLET! The standard was 150, and the Violet was $225.

I haven't seen any chinchillas in the petstores around here in a long time.

I have talked to several managers in PetCo's and Pet Smarts around me, (St Charles IL), and they said they hardly ever get Chinchillas in. But there are a couple smaller stores that I have seen carry Chins, one of them took good care of the Chin, one not so much. I spoke with the manager in the store that wasn't doing taking good care of the Chins. He seemed receptive to my input on his care standards, but I haven't been back there in a couple weeks.

Ok so basically I've brought nothing useful to this thread... :banghead:

At the stores around me I have seen, Standards, Beige, Ebony, and Mosaic. Mostly standards though. Recently, Petstupid told me that they have been having "problems with their chinchilla suppliers" and have not gotten any in for atleast three months. Which, I'm not disapointed in, though I do wonder what these Problems are....

African Violet is actually an acceptable and correct term for our violets. There are two types of violets: the African Violet (also can be called Sullivan Violet after the rancher that imported the herd from Rhodesia and subsequently developed them) that we know and love, and the German or Deutsch Violet, which hasn't made it out of Europe yet.

My Petco only recently started carrying chins, and most of the time they don't have any there. I saw one extra dark ebony female there last winter - who died from pneumonia less than a month after she was purchased. I know this because the family that bought her came to me for their next chin, not wanting to trust pet stores again. =p

The PetSmarts near me have standards. I haven't seen any other color there. The Petcos, on the other hand, have had biege and mosiac chins. The is a small, family run shop in our city that has had standards, beiges, pink whites, mosaics, and black velvets. They charge $99.99 per chin, regardless of color.
