I don't share problems very often. I've been down this road many times and sharing before I know what is going on, isn't usually what I do. But today, I thought I would start a thread so that people can see what happens and how things can progress.

A little history: Cooper is a rescue that I took in almost 7 months ago. He was an owner give up whose owner no longer had time for him. He will turn 3 at the end of this month.

In the beginning dealing with Cooper was problematic. He either was curled up into a tight quill ball, or he would bite, clamp down and grind his teeth (an aggressive biter).

Lucky for me he figured out that life in my home was pretty good and he stopped biting. That's probably been 4-5 months ago. Since then he has become a real sweet heart. Oh he has quite an attitude and doesn't hesitate to snuffle if he doesn't get his way (he's actually a bit spoiled). But now Cooper will splat out on my chest and lay under my hand. I can do just about anything with him.

Twice a day I wake my hedgehogs for health inspection. Once in the morning to ensure that nothing happened during their play time and once again when I take them out for the evening. My hedgehogs have learned that when I roll them on their back to kick out their legs. Even Cooper has figured this out. If I tell him, "Legs," he almost immediately reacts with feet sticking out. I do this so that I can get a good look at their faces and legs. I also do a quick rub along their chest and abdominal region to check for bumps/lumps. This is our routine.

During last night's inspection, Cooper kicked out his legs and everything appeared normal. Except he spit something out of his mouth. I wiped it off his lip and it felt hard. Before I could determine what it was, it fell to the carpet. I had my suspicion of what it was though. Time for a mouth check. While I was gently separating his lips to look inside, Cooper spit out another hard white thing. It's a tooth. Cooper has a bump on his lower jaw/gum line and is now missing two teeth from that spot.

We have a vet visit scheduled for later this afternoon. I expect it will either be an abscess or cancer. I'm REALLY hoping it is an abscess. If you don't mind, please send some healing energy for us today.

Poor Cooper. I hope everything works out at the vet and that its something minor.

Special prayers for little Cooper. I truly hope it is something fixable. He deserves to have more time with his loving Mommy

Sending good thoughts towards you and Cooper! Maybe he bumped his mouth on something? Please keep us updated on what happens.

Poor little baby, sending special prayers and healing thoughts, as well as an angel to look over your shoulder. Please let us know what the vet says!

Fingers crossed Julie. I hope he has something easily fixed. I know how hard you've worked with him.

Well.... it is not an abscess. We anesthetized Cooper yesterday to get a really good look at what is going on in his mouth. He has a mass. Doc says it doesn't look like the normal oral cancer masses that he sees in hedgehogs though. But, as we all know, cancer does not always present itself in a "normal" way.

We gave him a thorough examination to determine if there were anymore masses or problems going on in his mouth and as far down his throat as we could see. It looks like this mass is very localized at the moment. The rest of his mouth appears to be healthy.

We have a few options 1. biopsy the mass to determine what it is 2. attempt to excise it and then determine what it is 3. do nothing and wait and see what happens.

Due to its size, its location and its shape, doc thinks there is a good chance it can be excised. So we have an appointment for next week to try to excise the mass or to at least take a chunk of it out for testing if doc determines that excising will require a lot of damage to Cooper's jaw/gums. So at this point, even if it is cancer, lets hope doc can remove it and get it all out.

Cooper is doing fine though. He is eating well, running on his wheel and as sassy as ever. I am softening his food to make it easier on him.

Cooper has had his surgery and so far he is doing great. The mass and one additional tooth was removed today. Cooper has an indention/hole in his gum where the mass was. So far there was just a tiny bit of pink on his blanket just after the surgery, but no additional bleeding since. Doc used a laser to do the surgery. Cooper ate several mealworms for me when we got home. And he is his normal sassy self. Now to wait for the histopathology to come back.

Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery and the best outcome on the histopathology.

I had a couple of people ask, so I thought I would update. We are doing extremely well. Cooper didn't let this surgery phase him at all. He is eating normally, running on his wheel, and even has gained a couple of grams. You cannot tell there is anything wrong with him until you look in his mouth and see the hole where the mass was. Other than the tiny little drop of pink that came out while he was still waking up from the anesthetic, he has had no bleeding and if there is swelling it appears to be minimal (its hard to tell as he squirms when I try to look).

Still waiting on the histopath, but I expect those results won't be back until next week. So far I'm feeling very lucky and hopefully our luck will continue.
