Hello all,

I am new to Chinchillas. I've had Guinea Pigs in the past and want to get something a little longer-lived.

I have done all the reading I could find on Chinchillas and think I am ready to get the pieces in place.

I planned on one, but the show breeder I contacted offers deals if you buy 2, so I changed my mind.

My dilemma now is, I have no idea how big the cage should be. I also don't know if I need to make considerations for the little ones if they are slightly past 3 months.

Pretty excited, though!

Any advice, especially about cage size and taming would be appreciated.

The ferret nation cage is always a favorite of everyone! :)

You could try QC, but it just seems like a bunch of chicken wire to me.
Good job on joining this website before you got the chins, but make sure you get a same sex pair, or that the male is fixed.

The ferret nation is a definite favorite amongst pet folk. I would recommend that you get the two story though, as with two chins, you always have to be aware that they can turn on each other. Some chins can go their entire lives without a scuffle, others can go years and suddenly turn on each other. You should always have a second cage (or in the case of the ferret nation, a cage that can be divided) just in case.

Here's an FAQ that may help: http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46

Congrats on your new chin (s)! We'll be looking forward to pictures. :)

I agree if you can afford it and have the room for it I would definitly do the ferret nation!
As for taming advice just make sure you win the chinchillas trust so take it slow with them and dont rush it!

If you get the FN cage there is a place you can get pan replacements for the plastic that comes with the cage. Bass something or other; the link is definitely here somewhere. The pans are nice and deep, and hold in shavings / poop and the chins can't chew them. I'm really glad I got them.

The Ferret Nation is a wonderful cage. The doors open wide making clean up a breeze. It take some modifications to get it up and running, such as the bass equipment pans, but other than that its the best cage I have had so far.
