thank you guys.

those images were very helpful also! I like to play low guitar with him every night and just sing to him or scratch his chin :)

Let him come to you - once he trusts you, he'll get on your hand, and let you carry him out!
This seems like a fairytale to me. I have 5 pet chins, 2 of them for 4 years. While they will come to the door and let me give them all of the attention I want, jump into my hands, never! Allow me to pick them up without some effort on my part, rarely! I think it is unfair to give someone this expectation. I spend lots of time with my chins, they have every luxury a chin could have but they still do not wish to be removed from the safety of their cage by human hands. Once I get them out, they are fine. Most let me hold them with no problem. A couple even seem to enjoy it when I hold them, after I get them out of their cage. I think if you have given your chin time to settle then you should start handling to get them used to it. That is not to say they are going to like it. They might tolerate it though and possibly even enjoy it after some time. You need to be able to get your chin out for weighing, general inspection, playtime, vet checks, etc. So it is important to practice. If your chin gets very worked up try the next day. I'm not saying force yourself on your chin but the reality is, you are probably going to have to, to some extent.

Am I the only person here who has had chins for (what I consider) quite some time who don't jump on my arms eager to be held? I'm starting to get a complex...

Out of 7 of my chins I only have one that will occasionally climb in my hands on his own. I say occasionally because sometimes he acts like any other chin and will run from my hands when I try to get him.

OK, phew, I feel better now LOL. They do climb on me while my arms are in the cage but try to remove them while there, not so much LOL.

Out of 7, 3 will jump into my arms........one usually sprays me first and he is boy! but literally jumps into my arms. the other 2 actually jump on my shoulders or onto my arm.
but i take these 3 out pretty much every night (often to just clean their cage)
the other 4, well i have to play cute little cat & mouse games with them. the wood houses we built for them have a bottom and only one entrance so typically i just wait until they are in their house, which is always! and then just pick up the whole house. much less stress on them. the other 2 which are housed together, well they are getting better but for the most part its always a struggle to get them out.

one tip that i learned here is that when i do have them out for playtime we do the "catch & release". meaning i will pick them up or "catch" them then let them go and play more. this way they will eventually let you pick them up and you can take them back to their cage. but sometimes i still have to pull out magic tricks to get them. they just never want to stop playing!!

THANK YOU for this thread! I was really worrying that I was doing everything wrong since it is still difficult to get Chelsea out of her cage. I feel so much better knowing that is more the norm than the exception to the rule!

Shelly is not a fan of being held. She is getting better with it but it is not her favorite activity. I never pick her up out of her cage. I open the doors and let her run out on her own. Sometimes I will open the top door and she will use my hands as a jumping pad. However, she loves to sit on my back when I lay on the floor with her.

What i did was i just put a little treat in my hand and held my band near his cage door.. I slowly moved the treat further back on my hand so he would climb into it to get the treat and than i could pick him up more easily after that i just picked him up alot put him places he likes and now he likes being held :) Hope that helps man
