Hi i'm a recent chin mom and i'm a little confused about the hair ring check am i suposed to do it all the time or am i just checking him to make sure his thing is still where it belongs and if it is not then i do all that other stuff? and maybe some possible tips on how to sucsessfully perform such a thing for the first couple times so hes not just being stressed out thank you for any information you can give me hes about 7 months old hes not kept with females and never has been mated if that info is needed

I check for hair rings if I see a male messing with himself more than he should. Other than that, I don't check for hair rings. I doubt there are many breeders who do. Male chins do pleasure themselves on occasion, but if you see your boy constantly bothering with his penis, then I would check. Otherwise, he's most likely fine. When I checked regularly, I never found a hair ring on a single chin, only occasionally on chins who were in pairs or more.

I don't do regular checks either. Like Tunes mentioned, they usually let you know if they have a problem. I will try to take a quick look if I happen to catch them cleaning themselves. I think I've had to intervene maybe 2 times. They usually manage by themselves.

I don't do regular checks either. Just like others said only when I see a male constantly 'cleaning' himself and his penis is out all the time. If have had a few that needed hair rings removed thruout the years. Often it is the same chin until he finally figures out to properly clean himself right. I find very rarely does a pet male have a problem. Mostly it is the male in breeding and again that is rarely rare also

I only have one male that has hair ring issues. See link below.

He's easy going. He will fight back by trying to get away. And just gives up when he can't. Could it be he's fat and can't fight back?
I have a couple other males I wouldn't even attempt to check unless I saw excessive grooming. I'm afraid of being bitten. Would have to have another set of hands and have those ears pinched back. And if that didn't work.......off to the vet!

I check all of my males once in a while, but I have 3 that get them often and I check them once a week or their hair rings get bigger and harder to remove.

When I started breeding, I would check all my males on a regular basis to find that basically next to none had rings. Now, as perviously mentionned by the above, only when one is cleaning himself more than normal.

My rescue boy Dale will get one every now and then. Him and his cagemate Rufus both hump each other like crazy though. Dale will sit in the Buddha pose with his penis out of the sheath and just stare at me like "Hey, you want to take care of this please?" Rufus takes care of his own and sometimes I catch them helping each other. They are strange little boys.
