so i was wondering if this was ok just for inside my house. I know he cant go outside because of the heat, predators, and too many toxic things to chew on. I was thinking it would be nice just to take him around my house that way i wouldnt have to worry about him chewing on anying. (I am already planning to use my bathroom for him to run freely). I wouldnt plan on using it everyday or anything just once in a blue moon or so. So i need everyones expert opinions on this items safety and such. Thanks everyone :)

If you want to be able to take your chin with you I would suggest getting a bonding bag. If I remember corretly threewingfairy sells them. Chins have very fragile ribs. You don't want to risk crushing them.

EDIT: Here is the link to her online store.

thanks i knew there had to be some issue with it since its from petsmart :). I will order one of those asap. This place is just so awsome

I agree, we do not recommend harnesses or leashes for the fact that chinchillas have tiny ribs and if you jerk them around or if they try to jump and can't, they very well could crush a rib.

Besides the fact that most chins would not like wearing one of those.

WOW! I totally butchered Tiff's name. OOPS! I meant to say threewingedfury.

Chins have floating ribs, they are not like ours, they are made to expand and compress to fit through small holes, so they are easier to break and... "dislocate" for lack of a better word. They are smaller than tooth picks. Because of that harnesses are another way of crushing the chest cavity or puncturing a lung.

:neener:

The bonding pouches I make are all fleece and come with a cotton webbing strap. I mimic them after my sugar glider bonding pouches - they're larger and minus a zipper. They work great for taking a chin around the house as long as your house is cool, but you shouldn't have a chin in your house if it isn't cool :p. You do not want them to overheat in them. I haven't had any problems with keeping the chins in them as I make them deep enough so that it is harder for them to crawl out but you need to keep an eye on them just in case. I normally tote my wee babies around in them to get them accustomed to humans.
