I came home at lunch to feed Taz, and he is dying. At this point I have decided not to have him suffer anymore. I have decided to take him to the vet and let him go. He still has CC in his mouth from this mornings feeding.

I want to say thank you for everything everyone has done here for us. I wouldn't have had him this long without your help. Please say a prayer for him. He deserves it.

Again, thank you all very much for all you have done.

I'm very sorry Newf. You did everything you possibly could, but despite that, sometimes it isn't enough. I hope his passing is peaceful and that you are able to get some rest now.

You have my sincere condolences, Newf. This little guy has been on my kind all day today and I was hoping for a better outcome for both Taz and yourself. I know the decision is a hard one to make, as I have been in your shoes many times. But think of Taz in no more pain and at peace as he looks down on you and awaits the day he will see you again.

R.I.P Taz:angel2:

Thank you everyone for your kind words. He is at peace now, and I feel good about that part. The vet that was helping me with Taz was there, so she said she would put Taz to rest. It was very fast as he was almost gone by the time we got him there. She offered to do a necropsy on him for free as she wanted to try and find some answers as to why he got sick, and to further her knowledge on exotic animals like chinchillas. I agreed to let her do the necropsy so she can learn all she can about exotic animals like our chins. Maybe she will learn something that will help the next person in need.

Taz will be cremated and returned to me in a few days. It was very sad to go into the chin room and not see him there after coming back from the vet. But I know he is in a better place and not suffering.

Thank you again everyone for all your help and concern. I truly appreciate it.

I'm so sorry to read this. You had worked so hard to save Taz. Maybe the vet's findings will also give you some closure.

I'm very sorry Newf. I know how difficult a decision that is to make, but you did the right thing, and he is at peace now.

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. I appreciate it very much.

Everyone here has been so wonderful and helpful these past few weeks. This truly is a wonderful place for people who have chinchillas as pets.

so sorry to hear about Taz. Did the vet ever tell you if she found anything?

I received a phone call from the vet today. She told me she completed the necropsy and that she found some hemorrhages in his one lung. His teeth and organs were fine. His digestive tract wasn't good though. She said it was soft, spongy, and had some small hemorrhages in it as well. She said that would explain why he wasn't gaining weight and didn't want to eat. She couldn't tell me why that happened other than it could be any number of viral or bacterial infections. He didn't have any impactions in his intestines, or signs of bloat or anything like that. Whatever attacked his digestive tract was the main cause of death. I am keeping an eye on the other three chins, and I have been weighing them every week to make sure this doesn't happen again. She said that if the other three are still doing ok, then I shouldn't be worried about it being contagious. The other three are all fat and healthy, so I am not worried at this point about them at all.

The vet told me that his ashes were ready as well, and that I could come and get him when I felt ready. I will be picking him up after work today to bring him home. The vet clinic also sent me a sympathy card with a chinchilla on it a couple of days after Taz died. I opened it and got all teary eyed again as it had the chinnie picture on the front, and the Rainbow Bridge poem on the inside.

Sorry for your loss - I also got 'teary-eyed' from just reading your last post!

Thank you for the condolences. I appreciate them very much.

I brought Taz's remains home yesterday. I have to say that I was very impressed with the company that performed his cremation. I was not expecting that they would put together such a thoughtful package. There was a bookmark, a rememberance candle, a pamphlet on grief, and a card from the staff at the crematorium. There was also a nice letter from them with their condolences as well, along with a certificate of cremation that looks like one that you would get if it was a person that had been cremated. The most beautiful thing to me though was the box they had put Taz's ashes in. It was so thoughtfully done. The had a name plate on the top of the box. The box he is in is made of wood. I am not sure what type of wood, but it is very pretty. There is also a tiny lock on the box with two keys. I am not sure where we will be placing Taz remains, but when we do, we will light the candle they gave us in his rememberance.
