My only complaint, is so many of these trail riding places, its required guided.

That's where it's getting me. I hate the guided push ponies. That's not real riding. Apparently that's all they have out here are those trail rides, or I can pay for lessons I don't need. My friend has a few horses, but he is about an hour away and tied up most of the time because he's part of the PBR and travels a ton. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get back into it someday, even if it means buying my own horse

Mystic, that sounds like a perfect exercise! I will try it, I have a step in my bedroom, its perfect!

And Susan, if you do, please share too. Before this, I rode once bareback at 14...and fell off. And second time was 3 months ago, on a saddle that didn't fit well, and on rough terrain with little teaching. Just kinda "Just get on". I'm 30 and like I said, out of shape, but have gained such confidence in myself. 2 weeks ago, I thought about giving up. She wanted me to do "around the world", for those who don't know, you sit side saddle and backwards while the horse is led, it gives you balance exercises. Well I couldn't get my leg around the horse. I didn't have the flexibility, plus my weight hindered me. We were laughing, but inside I was crying. But I kept trying, went back last week and we worked a lot more on balance. Did balance exercises I could do easily by doing a "head, shoulders, knees and toes"...she lead the horse while I would put my hands in the air, out to my side, or on various body parts, helping all with balance. It turned out that made all the difference because I got on Scooter today and bam! Balance! Even at a trot now, I am balanced. Now I am working on control and direction. It felt so good to be up there, to go on the trail and control him by myself...though I couldn't get him to slow down so easily and at one point, she wanted me to turn him around...which means, he wasn't heading for the barn, so he fought with me. He pulls the reins from my hands, after a few lessons, I've learned how he does it and I just play tug of war till he gives up.

Oh man! I remember "around the world" it was soooo tough. And when I first started riding I also did bareback a few times. Bareback was scary to me since its like you have nothing to hold on to but the horses mane. My instructor wanted me to do sitting trot with bareback. pfft. lol

Yeah, the only way I really see I could do unguided trail rides is to lease a horse. My teacher leases her horses. A girl leases Scooter and comes riding all the time. Its kinda like renting your horse. And my teacher's ranch land...she has nature trails on site. So its perfect. I went back there yesterday and it was beautiful. A small pond, gazebo, wooden bridge, fire pit, etc. She has one area called "The Labyrinth" that is trails all crisscrossing eachother. Its really cool. And a lot of deer and wild turkeys live there. We see them all the time. She feeds them too, to keep them coming back.

I did a sitting trot bareback! She did give me reins/neckstrap. She rarely uses the bit. Scooter is her "rock". He's easy going, never spooked, nothing phases him. She has a rope bridle and reins on him. Either she has me holds the reins or the neckstrap and gets him in a trot. It was scare, but cool.
But trotting in the saddle was more comforting.
