This follows on from my post problems with castration, yes my chin in still ill 4 weeks later...to cut a very long story short, the following happened:
1. He had castration
2.A herina developed on one side so had op to remove
3. Infected stitches- he pulled both sides of stitching out
4. He then had a prolapse on opposite side to herina op.
5. He pulled all stitches out
6. infected again...........and the vet has said he could prolapse again but nothing could come out and he would have to self heal.
His meds are: Metacam 10ml once a day, baytril twice a day and cream called flamazine that looks like human cream to me!!!
He is now eating bits on his own, and pooing but not drinking so I have to give him a drink everyday and yes I know I have to be careful of lung flooding.
The thing I am worried about now is about 3 times-once previously and yesterday and this morning when I am trying to monitor his wound, basically look at it he seems to space out for a short period...he seems to kinda free and sort of put his head to side and see little white in eyes for no more then 10secs..he only does it when I check his wound and if fine in his cage-seperate from my other chins and he retruns fully active in seconds...i am just a little worried in case he has something else now and could it be catching to my other chins? I have a small kit that is 6 weeks old so am very worried.
My chin has been through so much, he is lively in himself but the vets said can't really do anything else for him and no they have not said he is that ill he needs to be put to sleep... please help what is this spacing out period???

thank you.

i dont have experience with this so i cant give you advice, but i wanted to say im so sorry you and your chin has gone through all this. i know it cant be any fun and i wanted to let you know my prayers are with you.

are you giving him 10 of metacam or .10?? If you are giving him a full ml of metacam that is why he is spaced out. its like giving 10 times the amount.

when i give metacam or any pain reliever, i use the tiny syringes that the total is 1.0 ml or cc and i only give .10, which literally is only a few drops.

this is a 1 cc syringe (it should only be filled to the first line, which says .10:

Thanks chinnychin it has been hard but thankfully he has been a little fighter and done really well, even the vets keep saying his lively and cute.
His been 14 times now it 4 weeks...I am still hoping he will get back to normal.

Yes I am giving him 0.10ml and 0.15ml of antibotic, we only give him the pain killer at night and he seems to do this spaceout when I look at his wound in the morning, I do have to pick him up for this. I am not even touching it when he does this..don't seem like a seizure????
His been on these meds 4 weeks now I know he needs them with all his illnesses but surely this is not good...On the plus side his orginal side with infected stitches is healing well..the vet was pleased with this.
I have read about seizures and parasites but can't really find anything that matches this????

Sorry just re-read my first post..it meant to say he seems to freeze...............

I would guess since chins are prey animals he is trying to not show how much pain he is in by freezing.

Ok thank you, I can understand about the pain it does look sore but very slowly getting better by looks things this morning about 1% better, he didnt space out today.
I guess I will just keep an eye on him and maybe mention to vet on Monday if he is still doing it..I will also ask about his meds.

Last night when I went to do his meds etc, this wound has been bleeding not alot but there was wet blood on his wound but none in his cage where he sits. The vet has said he can't be stitched again due to damaged tissues, and to keep the wound clean with salt water and put his cream on...this is also what I have to do even if the skin breaks down again sort of prolapse but nothing will come out the vet said...the vet said they can't really do anything else with the wound..his on pain meds but worried in case blood lose increases..his still eating and lively enough. Last night I just used plain water to get the blood off his wound as it looked to sore for salt water.
I am just wondering does anyone know of any other way I could maybe help the wound to dry up?

How is your chin doing? Maybe you could contact chinvet on this forum about the wound. She would know what to suggest.

His not doing to bad, thank you for asking. The vet took him off all his medication last night, still just have to use cream. He don't seem to have eaten anything again over night though, he was eating before a bit when on meds just not drinking....I will contact Chinvet about his wound it has got a little smaller and the vet said it looks OK.

If he is not eating you need to hand feed to make up for it. Once they lose weight during a illness it takes forever to gain back so better to feed now.

plus i would at least use the gas drops during this time. when they go a bit of time without eating and then start again, either on their own or by handfeeding, i find they are more gassy.

OK no problem, I didn't stop hand feeding him he still has some every night, how many mls do you recommend till he is eating fulling on his own? I have noticed he eats quite alot of hay, and roughly about 4 pellets from his bowl. Not heard about gas drops, where do I get these from? His wound is smaller again last night..I am puzzled about the not drinking, so i am giving him drink by hand but being very careful as do not want to flood his lungs. the vets didn't help with this at all!!!

as a supplement, personally i feed my chin 30 - 40 mls a night in addition to the pellets and little hay he eats. the fact that he is eating a lot of hay is really good.
the gas drops are just infant gas drops that you would find in a drug store, over the counter. brand names like Mylicon, i just use the generic infant gas drops and give abuot .05 - .10 cc before feeding. also your chin is getting some fluid from the handfeeding mix you use so at least he is getting something.

Ok thank you, I will see what I can find in our shops.
He seems to be doing well now, I know he is done well to survive 3 operations, so I just need to be patient now till he is fully back to normal. He does look in his food bowl now as soon as it goes in his cage. His little kit is also doing really well his 7 wks now and happy little chatting thing always talking. Shame he can not live with the others as they have now rejected him..:( At least his still with us I don't mind two cages that I have now.
