Hi, I'm Stephanie, a nineteen year old college student, and I live with a very darling chinchilla named Mochi, because she's just as squishy and sweet as the Japanese dessert after which she is named.

Mochi is a ten month old standard grey I received recently from a local breeder and in the past two months (wow I can't believe it's been that long!) I've been on this and other sites learning as much about chinchillas as possible. Truly, I'm quite grateful that there is so much helpful information out there for new chin owners to benefit from, so thank you all.

Unfortunately, Mochi came with the habits of chewing her fur and biting her cage bars. If anyone has any advice for her I would appreciate it; so far I've just tried to show her affection and support in hopes that time will calm her nerves about being in a new home.

Also, I am now considering changing her food to a different brand and restocking on some basic supplies and fun toys. If anyone would recommend a nice dealer or store in the New England area or even farther if the shipping is reasonable, it would really help point me in the right direction.

I'm glad to be joining what seems to me as a most friendly forum of fellow chin-loving people. ^^

Welcome Stephanie. :)

If you check the classified ads, you should find plenty of "stuff" for Mochi. Everything from fleece hammocks to wood choo-choo trains for play time. Pet Products By Nature has wonderful wood products and they often offer specials just for our members. If you look to the top of the forum, you can click on their banner in the rotation. There are also a number of other people up there who sell supplies as well.

Hi Stephanie and Moki, welcome to a great forum! Yes, definitely check the classifieds in this forum. Even if the shipping seems like a bit of money, the products are very well priced and you definitely get a lot more for your money with better quality than you would get at a pet shop.

Mmm.... Mochi... One of my favorite treats. Don't worry, I won't eat her. :) Welcome to CnH!

Welcome to the family Stephanie and Mochi! This is the best forum - the people here are very friendly and very knowledgeable about chins. And all we request in return is a pic or two of Mochi :) It feeds our addiction! :)

Welcome, With all the people on this forum that create wonderful products for our animals, you won't need to go to a pet store.

welcome again

:welcomewagon:

I'm glad you decided to join us.

As for the fur chewing and cage bar biting. I wonder if he'll settle down after he gets accustomed to your routine. I'd let him out for plenty of playtime so he expends some of that excess energy. Feed him a high quality pellet food and hay and give him plenty of wood chews. As others have mentioned, there are plenty of vendors here selling great chinchilla products at reasonable prices. I wish you luck with him.

What is mochi? (I live in the midwest, so Japanese food isn't very well-known here. Hay, however, is cheap as heck, so it's a trade off I guess. :D ) Also, are you in chinchillin or chinchilla_love on live journal? Your chin's name sounds very familiar, and I hang out there too.

Welcome to the forums. Hope you have fun.
