Wondering if anyone still has or still makes the old style metal collar rivets...not the new style which I have no experience with but hear bad things about. Likewise, I'm not terribly fond of the idea of plastic ones as we all know how they get chewed through. SO, point me in the right direction anyone? Need about a dozen but would buy more if I had access.

I just bought some from Ryerson's but not sure if they are the old style or new. There is a picture of them on their website.

Nope, pretty sure they only carry the new style. Anyone who's been around a good length of time and got their "start up stuff" from older ranchers still know what I'm talking about LOL! But since you mention it, have you used them? What are your results? If I cannot find the old style I may have no recourse.

Honestly they are just now being shipped to me so I haven't seen them in person, guess I wasn't paying attention and just assumed they were the same. I will compare them to the ones I have in the collars that I am currently using, many of which are old ones from the Shoots so I should be able to tell the difference. Hopefully they will be here in a day or two and I can check them.

Yeah, the old style have like a "Y" on the tip of the rivet peg? You can spread it to make the rivet harder to get out of the collar once attached? If that makes sense to you, you've got the old style LOL!

Just what I think my old feeble mind remembers, but the new ones are the same in design, but if I remember right with the new ones you need to have the first hole it goes through slightly larger for it to work properly and seat all the way in. With collars from Ryersons I think they are already made that way. I have some from a herd I bought out and they work fine.

ICK! Well that may not work :( I have a BUNCH of old collars purchased between MilBur and Hykes when I was starting up...and the old style rivet works great :( sucks having to buy new collars because I have no rivets. Would much rather just buy rivets. Collars last forever...rivets get lost daily LOL

I get 100 for about $3. You just stick them through the collar and pull the tabs back to lock them. You have to get them small enough to fit the collars, otherwise you have to cut them so the tabs aren't too long.

I've seen these before but never small enough (width wise, not length) to fit through the itty bitty hole? Where do you buy the small ones?

Most office supply stores carry them. I have used them also and they work but are not as handy as the metal rivets. Why throw the old collars out? Just open up one of the holes to make the new rivets work right for you.

The brass fasteners work, but are truly a PINTA to remove. I was told to curl the ends around, so it's not like you can just unfold them.

Don't toss your collars even if you do get new, I'll take them! LOL With a bit slightly bigger than the hole just drill out one hole. I'm not a fan of the new "button" rivets either, they seem to pop loose easier.

I have no idea what the thing with the older rivets are, if they were originally used for something else or if they were made just for chin collars or what...

I've looked extensively this year into getting some made as the old style rivets fit both the old and new collars. I discovered that they have to re-make a form for them the total cost was going to be around $12,000. Of course that included the initial batch of a million rivets.

Whomever ordered the first batch in the 70's outsourced to China and someone here knows who did it and who has the form. If one were able to get ahold of that info they could place a smaller bulk order of 100,000.

The first two pictures are the ones I want to get made. Love 'em.. The third picture is a super old one... these would be very easy to get made if there was interest.

Yep, the first two pics are mine ;) they work wonderfully...I've had one collar slipped in the past year and the female didn't realize so no harm done. But I worry constantly about the rivets...and with herd expansion I need more. Period. I heard the plastic ones get chewed in an untimely manner which leaves metal and I've heard nothing but popped rivets from the new metal ones :( SO, to make them work I need to just drill out my collars then? Hmmm...simple enough I suppose. Will have to try I guess...thanks for all the input and it's a real shame we cannot get these anymore as they work perfectly and much better than the new stuff apparently.

I have about 100 females with the new pins in their collars and have had no problems with them at all. Once I snap them on I spread the ends with a small screwdriver like I have always done with the old ones. Ryersons got the closest ones they could get without having a new mold made which was very cost prohibitive. They still had to order a million of them if I remember right, which I am sure they will never sell that many of them in my lifetime.

Get the rivets from the office store before you drill. I thought there was no way they were going to fit yet they fit fine in all of my collars. I got mine from Office Depot and they only had one size in gold.

Spoof have you ever tried those older style ones? They look like they would work fine, but I'm guessing that since they don't have them anymore there was something wrong with how they worked?

Ronda uses them on some of the old collars that have holes too small for anything else. I'll ask her about them. They may be a custom thing from a ranch she bought out in the past and unused by anyone else.
