The vet that I drove you to see Kathy was not experienced at all , you did the right thing in asking the forum for help. I had never seen a chin act or behave that way, but my "guess" was a brain injury as I stated.
Tabitha seems to be more experienced with this sort of thing, and states that neurological injuries do NOT get better with time.
Since there is a chinchilla and exotics specialist that you are seeing tomorrow in Sudbury with another chin, why not bring the baby along too to see her view on things?

I would take him there, but the other chin is already gone to see the vet tomorrow, so it will have to be for next week or so, because my sister is coming in about a week, so she would be able to take him, or I might take the opportunity to go with her to Sudbury then, I will phone them also, to see what they tell me about his problem, just in case they know if he has a chance or not, because if the solution is just euthanize him, then I can do so in here.

A phone call is not acceptable in this case. Your original discription had me saying yes fight as long as he will..but it is looking at him you actually see how bad he is you do not have the skills to descibe him clearly, and I feel you are just looking for someone to agree with you so you can justify your poor choices. This confirms what I edited out earlier, You are still showing the poor judgment you showed in the past. My degree is in behavioral psycholoy and Neuroscience. I have seen many rats that had strokes and neuro-damage induced and they still functioned better than he does. Keepin him alive is cruel and selfish

Sometimes when we decide to go down the path of being breeders it comes to hard decisions, although IMPO you should not be breeding as you show a complete lack of maturity and care for your chinchillas, but you are despite saying you were going to sell out and just keep a few pets...

You need to at least consider what is best for the chinchilla. He does not look like he is fighting look at those eyes he looks like he is in pain last night I saw the same look in the eyes of a kit that had prolapsed and I had hoped to never see that look again. Please prove me wrong about you and do what is right I am not sure I could handle watching another chinchilla suffer in your care like the one your mom watched die for days

That video was sooooooooo sad. I feel so much for this little guy. I can't imagine him having quality of life.

I hope you do the right thing in this situation Kat...and not prolong it.

Of course I would not know to describe him clearly or else I would have not asked here about him, I am not looking to justify my poor choices, and I don't know what you even mean about that,

So what do you suggest? break his neck so he dies today? I am going to euthanize him for sure, because I understand he is suffering now, I don't want to let him suffer anymore, and I have not said that I won't euthanize him, I was just asking for a second opinion, in the case you guys had seen this before, because of course I didn't know and I didn't want to get him killed when it was maybe not necessary to do so, I brought him to the vet, and the vet didn't even know what could it be, and I just said, I have to phone the other vet to see what I can do there and to see if they know something or if I can bring him to an appointment, why don't you read what I say instead of acussing me of cruel and selfish and of me trying to do the opposite, I just find that there is no need to read between lines to create argument, when to not euthanize him it's not really my intention, because I actually will do so.

Now I am more certain that he needs to do be euthanized, thanks, that's all I wanted to know.

No, I won't, I realize that I do have to euthanize him, and I will be phoning the vet tomorrow to get it done, it's just that when I brought him last week, he fell asleep on my hand, like he was so comfortable, and I felt really bad because I have never had to do that for an animal before, and it wasn't really easy for me to accept that he had to go, it is my first time doing it, but I know that when you breed these kind of things can happen, and I understand that.

I will refain from telling you how I feel about you at the moment and simply tell you to do what is best for this kit. Euthanize him. I do not know how anyone with common sense could not tell that he was suffering. My boyfriend and I were crying during this video. Please do the right thing. This will not heal. Nor will it get any better.

I'm not going to be nice and sugar coat it like some of the others have been nice enough to do. How in the world can you not see the pain in his eyes? That was the first thing I saw on the video and I had to turn it off. I didn't get more than 20 seconds in and I just couldn't watch anymore. I have had chins die in front of me, but never have I seen hurt quite this bad in a chin's eyes. He needs to be euthanized, now instead of later. Shoot, this already should have been done a long time ago. Please stop his suffering.

Hi

Don't worry, I figured that it was going to be hard to explain the way he walked by not showing you guys a video, and it's true, you think that because they look like they want to survive that you would do anything to help them, but sometimes it is the complete oposite and you just have to let them go because they are actually suffering, I just couldn't let him go right away on that day without knowing that there was no chance for him to survive, so I really had to find out to make sure that he didn't really have a chance to survive.

thanks for your words

Well, yes, I couldn't tell so much, because it is the first time that I actually see a chin like that, so I had to ask to know for sure, but I will euthanize him though, don't worry, I realize he is really suffering, before I was seeing him with hope, that he could get better, you know, it's hard to accept that a chin has to die, so you always sort of thing the oposite, which is to fight with them and get them better.

Excuse me? You're going to make this poor baby wait a "week or so" before going to the vet to be PTS? If you can not afford the vet bills and a reliable way to get to the vet, you shouldn't have the pets, let alone be BREEDING them. No vet is going to tell you to keep this baby alive once they see him, and if they do they are just plain stupid. Frankly, I think you're going to tell the vet what you know will make him say this baby has a chance. You can see in the video he has absolutely no will to do anything. Take that baby to the vet with you and do what's right by him. Then, do what's right by the rest of your chinchillas.

And frankly, that baby needs to be put to sleep by a professional. There's no way in h*** you know how to properly euthanize an animal at home.

I meant that I can euthanize him in Timmins, not in Sudbury, and of course not in my house, geesh

You really need to stop projecting human emotions onto your animals. Of course any creature will eat and drink if they are able, but if there is something serious going on you need to do the right thing and end his suffering. Waiting a week to have someone tell you what needs to be done is ridiculously cruel to that poor chin. I am no expert in chin breeding but as a compassionate human being with common sense, I can see that this little chin needs to be put to rest.

I'm confused as to why you can't take both to the vet at the same time. Is it the money or that you only have one appt? Considering you already had the chin looked at by a vet you can bring him in and just ask the vet to put him to sleep. He doesn't require an office visit or anything. This will make it to where he doesn't need a second appt. and will keep the visit from costing you an office visit. If charges you one I would ask him nicely since this is a follow up visit, if he would be willing to waive the fee and only charge you for the actual euthanasia. Most vets are willing to work with you, especially if you ask. If you are a normal customer some vets are willing to take payments as well.

I just really...ugh I don't even know what else to say. I just don't understand your excuse at all.

Kathy,

The chinchilla does NOT need to see a specialist to be put to sleep. Please, for his sake, take him in by tomorrow and have him put down. From what I understand, your sister is taking the other chinchilla to the vet and has already picked him up and that's why this guy can't go along on that trip. You can find a vet office within five minutes of you and they should know dosages to put any sized animal down. It goes by body weight and they just need to be a vet to put the animal down humanely. Please do NOT attempt euthanizing him on your own at home. With the level of inexperience you have I fear the outcome of this. Please, take him to a vet near you and have him put down. I would say do it NOW, but I don't think you will. Do it no later than tomorrow...that is NOT a chinchilla with quality of life.

Well everyone has already covered my thoughts. I had a hard time watching the video myself. Yes I could see the pain in his poor eyes. Thats no way to live and for you to keep flopping him around for the camara seemed even more cruel and un-usual. I dont think we humans can help putting human emotions on our animals but seriously if you were that animal would you want to live? We could only HOPE someone could do the right thing for us. I know its hard putting an animal to sleep but if you want to be a breeder you have to be willing to do the hard things too....sorry...hopefully logan can r.i.p. soon

Kathy
the only reason why I said to bring him to the specialist with the other chin tomorrow was so that she would AGREE with all of us that this baby chin needed to be put down instead of giving you false hope that he will get better....The vet that I brought you to see in our hometown didn't say to put him down and I was SHOCKED when she said it was up to you if you wanted to continue to hand feed him and see if he got better. I DID NOT agree with that comment, so I thought that when you saw the specialist tomorrow she would tell you, like I did, to put the poor little guy to sleep.
Please bring him in to the vet tomorrow morning and do the right thing. If you need a ride I will bring you myself!

i agree, please put him down, our 8 year old boxers back legs also gave out and we held in as long as we could until it was unbearable to see her the way she was anymore....we thought about how it was in her eyes to not be able to walk and as much as it broke out hearts we put her down...she knew what having a normal life was until she lost her back legs...we loved her to much to let her suffer and im hoping you feel the same for this little baby...It broke my heart to watch that video for you to even think he had a chance of recovering..

I really hope you make the right decision and put him down, and soon. I opened up the video but didn't get more than maybe 20 seconds into it, I couldn't watch it - like others said, you can see the pain in his eyes. He barely gets around, moreso flops around, and that's no way for a chin to live. Think about the other chins we all have - they love tall cages where they can hop from one shelf to another like squirrels on speed. That's what chins are supposed to be... not how Logan is getting around.

From your first description, I thought maybe he had sort of a gimp or something, but could still reasonably get around. Something like a tripod maybe, but a little more wobbly because of his young age. But after the video... no.... you need to have a vet put him down. Do the humane thing.

I do not know anything relevant about neurological diseases other than they are serious and a lot of times irreversible. Pertaining specifically to chinchillas, I do not know anything. If you are trying to find any way possible this kit may get better, bring him to a knowledgable vet now. If not, I would consider euthansia soon.

The thing that concerned me most was actually a part of the video I think a couple people didn't even get to. When he flips over and he eventually rights himself but he seems not to be able to control not only where his hind legs go in the situation but possibly when they move. When he tried to right himself the first few times after he'd flip over once he obviously was moving his hind quarters in the wrong direction and twisting himself more.

This animal has a will to move, albeit, cannot execute that will to a reasonable degree. Which is really what it comes down to--can this animal do most of the things he wants and are beneficial to him, and can he get everything he needs? I do see what others call "pain in his eyes". A lot of times an animal will not open their eyelids fully and their eyes will look dull when they are quite ill.

I understand you want everyone to say "yes I've seen this before and he'll be fine" or something reassuring, I would want that too. And to have hope is human. So is to err. You seem to care for this animal and are therefore conflicted about what to do, because you want to do the best thing. Just make a logical decision that is best for Logan and try to leave emotions out of the decision although I understand it's very difficult to do that.

Let us know what happened to Logan if you choose to update the thread.

This is almost exactly what happened to Ivan around when he turned 2 weeks old, however there were a few differences, the most important being that he recovered in one week. From what you have described, this baby hasn't recovered since birth, let alone improved in his condition, therefore I doubt he will at this point.

What happened with Ivan, was that he started off by being unable to move his front 2 paws, but pushed himself around with his back feet. I took him to the vet who flipped him over and noticed (like what caiti pointed out,) that he would attempt to flip himself over, but that it took multiple tries to get there. Later that day, his back legs stopped working as well. By the next day, his tail no longer moved.
However, as he didn't seem to be in any pain, because his eyes were totally alert and open, and also because he had a voracious appetite, I hand fed him for a week and put 'the decision' on hold. Had he stayed the same or not gotten better after the first 3 days, I would have put him to sleep. However, a day after his tail stopped was paralysed, it started again. The next day, his hind legs worked, and he learned how to get around on just hind legs very well. 2 days later, all but his front paws themselves were working--his arms and little elbows were moving, but his paws were not, therefore he couldn't grasp food, so I was still hand feeding him.

But 1 week after I spotted the problem in the first place and took him to the vet, he was back to normal.

I believe what happened was that he fell from a high ledge in his cage, or he got out of the cage and whilst running around, chewed on something he wasn't supposed to --a wire or some paint. Obviously I made many mistakes when I (okay, Sonya) had Ivan, because I didn't have this forum, so he was in a non-baby safe cage with ledges that were way too high, and Rodya and Sonya were together for a few months until I found Chins-n-hedgies, and fixed all my mistakes.

In my opinion, the problem with Logan seems much more severe than Ivan's case, and I would suggest you do right by him and let him go.
Then again, I also suggest that you do right by all your animals and cease breeding/collecting chinchillas, as you have stated multiple times on many different threads that you do not have the money to vet your animals properly, nor do you seem to have transportation much of the time. It would be in their best interest if they were with someone who had a steady source of income and a serious amount of cash tucked away for emergencies like this one.
