I am wondering if a 6 year old chinchilla is considered to be kind of old? Is this a bad age to adopt a chinchilla? I found one I might be interested in, but I dont know if he will adapt to his new home very well, because of his age. From what I am told he is used to being picked up and held, and enjoys being petted. He is on a good diet (Mazuri and Oxbow), plus has normal dust baths. What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks:wink2:

I prefer that the chins are at least a couple weeks older (8 to 10 weeks) when they are adopted out. Six weeks is a bit young, but I have heard of people weaning them and adopting them out at that age. Could he stay with his mama a couple more weeks?

6 years old is not too old. I recently brought in some 10yr olds and they adapt well to new surroundings. Remember, chins live 15 to 20 years on average and sometimes longer so 6 is still a youngin. ;)

He not a baby, he is 6 years old:)

I got Leonard when he was 5. His previous owners gave him popcorn and mini marshmallows as a treat. The food he was on was very bad. His owners loved him very much they just didn't know what the best care was for him. I cold switched him immediately and he had no issues. I put him in his new FN cage with and Elvis hammock and Fleece tube and wood ledges to judge on and eat and he has been in heaven ever since! While Leonard is a single chin, he does come out and share playtime with Mick and Wesley. All three get along great for playtime, I just wouldn't want to risk anything introducing Leonard to a cagemate. He is now 8 and is happy as a lark!

I adopted one who's 7 and I think she adapted better than my 1 1/2 year old. I really think it just depends on the chin and it's surroundings and background:)

Pssh, my oldest boy is 6! I think that age is the prime of their lives! I say adopt!

UPDATE: Is This Age Okay To Adopt? Opinions Needed.

I found out he is coming in a cage that measures 24" wide, 14" deep, and 24" tall. Isnt this a really small cage for a chinchilla? I actually feel real sorry for him, because Im sure he cant move much in there. He is a beautiful dark ebony color. They are charging $150 for him, his cage, and supplies. There are alot of useful supplies, but they dont have a wheel for him. I dont know if its just me, but that seems like alot of money. Im not sure what to do. Here is a picture of him, and his cage. What does everyone think?

Titles asks if its an okay age to adopt at, but you didn't mention his age :). To me, that seems like a fair price.

He's super cute! The cage isn't too bad--it looks like he has ledges and shelves to hop around on--I say if you have the money then get him! Ebonies are really cute chins!

The cage size isn't overly small by any means. At least, in my opinion it isn't. You can always get him another cage later. It looks like a fairly nice cage in the picture - I'd probably take out the plastic and put in more wooden shelves. The price isn't bad at all considering what a chin and cage would cost at a petstore. Wheels aren't everything, I don't use wheels at all here.

Im just wondering if a 6 year old chinchilla with a small cage for $150 is a good price. I honestly dont know how much the dark ebony sell for, that why I really need some help from everyone:)

I charge at least $150 for a dark ebony baby. For an adult, who is not a rescue, I'd probably charge at least $120. It depends on the background of the chinchilla. But, I think that what you are being charged for the chinchilla and cage is fair as long as the chin is healthy and has a pretty good attitude towards people.

She got him from the breeder JAGS. She is his first and only owner. She said he is used to being picked up and held, and enjoys being pet. She said he is healthy, and hasnt had any health problems. She has him on a good diet (Mazuri and Oxbow), which is a good thing. At least I know he is being feed a good diet.

I'd say get him. 6 isn't that old considering how old they live to be. And like stated earlier, he comes with what he needs :)
