Is Ashe a boy or girl?

Most of the people at Petco and Petsmart are not educated enough to know the difference in chin sexes. When I've been to PetSmart, I would see the chins listed all as females, but I sexed 2 that were for sale a while back and they were both males. I let the manager know and he just shrugged it off and acted as if he didn't believe me, nor did he care. That's why it's best to purchase from a knowledgable breeder, that way you know what you're getting.

First, thank you all for your help sexing Ashe! I am still keeping her name though because she reponds to it....I guess it's an ok name for a girl too!

Scott and I had a discussion about how to handle the situation, which he handled better than I thought...lol! We decided to persue the neuter, after we check with the vet and see how many she has done. He even offered to help pay for half of the surgery because he just loves Kunya!! So at least now the situation is less-stressful because I was worried he would be mad for wanting to look in to surgery.

So now I just have to wait and see what happens on Monday!! Wish us luck! I will keep everyone posted!

Thanks again! I am so glad to have great friends like all of you!

Just remember to keep them separated for a few months after his surgery. He can still have sperm even after being snipped that will dissipate in a few months. Hope things go well.

Thank you, Sue! I will be sure to remember, good to know!

Everywhere that I read they said that the leftover sperm should be gone in 1 month... I've also read somewhere that the longer that you leave the chins separated, the less of the chance that they will get along again as cagemates.

I have to say, I LOVE the name Ashe! I'm glad you're keeping it. (My first chin "boy" was a girl to. So she ended up with the name Winston, ha ha.) I don't think they mind. It's kind of tom-boy sounding. ;)

And I've never neutered a chin, but when I was doing rescue work I had two of them come to me neutered. They were fine. I had a female brought to me right after a spay surgery to. It's harder on the girls to recover (I've heard), but I held her a lot to keep her warm and keep an eye on her and made sure she got enough to eat.

Well that is good news, Alexis! Please let me know how you make out tomorrow!!

Definitely mark you calendar for 111 up to even 120 days for babies. But you will definitely notice Ashe getting larger and see movement in her if she is pregnant and especially if you hold her you will feel baby movement.
Despite the fact Kunya is being neutered, yes you have to prepare for the fact they may not get along again. What you'll have to do is go very slowly with reintro as Kunya will be sore and delicate after surgery.
The good news is the FN cage can be split in two, should they not get along or should Ashe be pregnant. I wish Kunya the best of luck with his snipage on Monday.

Don't castrate him just so they can be together. Split the ferret nation in two and let them live separately, without putting him through surgery. Unless you have a very knowledgeable vet, it can be very dangerous to castrate a chinchilla. A good friend of mine just had this done, by a "knowledgeable" vet who it turned out wasn't so knowledgeable and she lost the little guy after a lot of heartache. If she is pregnant, you can just divide them into same sex pairs and let them live that way.

Thanks, Tunes. I really don't want to put him through surgery and take the chance of losing him....that will just KILL ME! I really like your idea of same sex pairs is a way better idea and less stress for Kunya and myself.

Thanks for the help. I am sorry for your friend's loss of her chin.
