Hey there everyone,

Well, I just attempted to introduce my two chins, Shun (male, standard, 6 months) and my Suki (female, mosaic, 6 weeks) and I had a bit of an issue.

So, I took both of them (with my boyfriend to help) into a neutral area with no 'personal belongings' while watching them very carefully (so no inappropriate business was going on) and everything was looking good. They were together for about 20 mins and everything was great, then they started playing chase.

After a while the little one attacked the big male and pulled out a tuft of fur. My male was totally fine after wards, and it seemed his pride hurt more than the fur.

Anyway, my question is: should I try this sometime in the future again? Or does anyone think they are just not compatible at all? Is there a better way to approach this situation?
Thanks in advance~

What the heck?!? You have been on CnH for about two months..you should know all about a 30 day quarantine and not letting males and females play together! I am just gonna say it. A six mo old male chins ***** could do permanent damage to a 6 week old baby. Can she get pregnant yet no, but he will do his best to try. And I doubt there was any fur pulling, it's called fur slip when a chin just lets it's fur slip out. Don't let them have playtime again ever!

Try it again when your female is about 8 months old. Before then, you are seriously endangering her health. She is much too young to be introduced to male. The instant she can get pregnant, she will get pregnant, which is as young as 8 weeks. That means she will be giving birth by the time she's 5 months old.

You also should wait to introduce a male and a female until you have an idea of the quality that they are both going to be as adults. You want them to compliment each other, offset each other's flaws. You have no idea at 6 weeks old if the female will even be breedable upon reaching adulthood.

Wow I dropped the ball on that question I only skimmed than read the questions
Yea playtime is a nono BIG TIME and they shouldnt even be breathing the same air for 30 days and you should wash your hand in between touching the two

Lee - Don't try and race in to answer the question first. You can cause serious issues that way. Read it in it's entirety, THEN answer if you have something to contribute.

Lee, Peggy's response to you was way too kind. You need to stop answering questions at all until you are at the point where you don't need help and answers to the most basic of questions. You've given dangerous advice more than once.

Ive only passed on the advice people give me or i give my own suggestions for things that have worked out for me so far
Ok so now ive been told i shouldnt answer any questions and i shouldnt ask because noone will answer me? WOAH great forum guys
Seriously I spaced out on one question which was immediately caught yea it was a bad space out but it didnt end badly. I said i was sorry and im sure that the person wont follow my advice. Im curious to when ive given dangerous advice beyond this one time and once when i read a hedgehog question and answered not realizing it was a hedgie one and yet i immediately gave an answer that would have helped about a minute after i posted my initial response

Edit: Before I get yelled at for this post im just going to throw it out there that a forum is to get everyone opinions not just certain people. I know a decent bit and i can answer alot of question but that doesnt mean i wont myself have questions. Im going to continue to pass on what ive been told on here because if someone told me the info and it helped i think its still gonna help the next person

I'm just curious about the fact that a 6 WEEK old kit has been taken from her mother.

I thought that the weaning process didn't start for about 10 weeks, and even then, that the breeder kept the kit for 2 or so weeks more to see if it is safely gaining weight and able to go to a new home.

Just wondering...

Lynn, some people will wean at 6 weeks. Most hobbyists prefer to wean at 8, but there are others who follow the 6 weeks, 200 gm rule.

He also said that its from a petstore and petstore workers usually have no idea of the age of their chinchillas im not sure their even told at any point...

Really??? I didn't see any mention of the circumstances from which the 2 chins came...

THANKS, Tunes, I just thought that 6 weeks just seemed awfully young to take such a tiny baby from her mother, but I guess if the weight is up to a healthy level, it's OK.

I was very sad when I took my 2nd chin, Baby, from his mother, even though he was old enough. Luckily, she had 2 more kits to keep her company, and, since Baby was the runt, he got spoiled rotten immediately by me!!!

Parroting information without any firsthand knowledge isn't the same as giving advice.

You got lucky. Don't be so quick to rush to give advice on things you know nothing about.

Im curious to when ive given dangerous advice beyond this one time and once when i read a hedgehog question and answered not realizing it was a hedgie one and yet i immediately gave an answer that would have helped about a minute after i posted my initial response.
There was the broken pelvis thread where you had no idea what was going on and said she looks like a normal, healthy chin. As for the hedgie question that you answered by mistake, it was a question about breeding. Which you have no experience in with chins, therefore should not have been answering. It was amusing that you pointed them to the faq, since you seem to ask questions instead of reading the faq yourself.

The purpose of the forum is for people who know what to do to give advice to those that are asking. Again, parroting or regurgitating information that you've just learned does not make you an instant expert and does not qualify you to answer those questions. Sit back, learn from the forum and stop giving information on things you know nothing about.

Please listen to Tunes and take her advice. That female is too young to be with a male. At least give her time to reach full maturity.

to the OP, follow Tunes' advice. If you let your female even play with your male there will be disastrous consequences, note I said WILL BE not CAN. If you want to breed them later on, make sure you know their backgrounds and that they came from a reputable breeder. If you don't have that info I suggest keeping them separate...breeding is not just throwing a male and female together to get cute babies. It should be given much more thought than that.

Lee, this is not the first time you've given dangerous advice. No one is saying to stop posting but to PLEASE slow down and fully read the question before replying. If you notice...other members that are new will post to a question thread with "I'm new to chins too so I can't answer your question but hopefully someone will be along soon who can help you!" This keeps the OP from getting bad/dangerous advice and brings the thread to our attention faster. Please, do not post in the breeding section to give advice. Not trying to be mean but you have absolutely NO experience with breeding and unless you have first hand experience...giving advice on that topic is ALWAYS dangerous.

Also, you were never told to stop asking questions. You were told to read the FAQ's which you tell other new members to do. Most if not all of your questions have been answered before or can be located in the FAQ's. You were warned that asking too many redundant questions could make people less likely to respond to your questions...not that they would not be answered.

Thank you everyone for the advice, and I apologize for stirring up commotion.

If anyone is interested, the two are from a pet store but I know the breeder of the chins that go to the pet store is reputable since I know both the breeder and the store owner, if that makes a difference.

Anyway, this is actually only the second time I've heard about the quarentine suggestion, and the first time I heard it was after I had gotten my female. Also, I have been on the forum for two months becaue I have a hedgehog aswell, and only recently started with chinchillas.

But thank you everyone again, and I will most deffinately heed your advice and not put the two together untill they are both old enough.

Sincerely,
piper
