Okay so. Heres the current situation but its a very long story short. Ill give bullet points here.
-question is after the bullet points for anyone who doesnt want their back story-
*i adopted two neglected chins in july last year. They were 1.5 and two years old. And both malnourished
*we were told nothing about them other than that they were both males, and not related to each other biologically.
*one week later one of the males had two babies.
*we then found out we had a male and female, and that the female had been pregnant the whole time the past owner had her.
*separated the new parents immediately when we found the babies. (After thank god figuring out which one was the female by her nursing them)
*when babys were big enough, we separated them from momma. They were two males, and we didnt want them to breed with her.
*4 months later in November... She had two more babies. Which makes sense, because we thought she was a male, didnt separate her partner before the birth. He got her pregnant before we removed him apparently.
*one baby was separated (male) and the other has been left in cage with momma because its a female and they adore each other.
*all of our chins are very healthy finally. Momma and daddy are NOT malnourished anymore from the previous owners. (For anyone who might be concerned about back to back pregnancies, obviously we had absolutely no idea and she was pregnant when we got her. But that situation is handled and she has been retired from EVER having babies again, as we would have never done that to her purposefully)
THE QUESTION AT HAND:
The oldest baby boy from the FIRST litter in july was separated from momma, and not put with daddy. He was put in his own cage. He is now 9 months old and is outgrowing the smaller chin cage and needs to be moved in with his daddy to the adult sized cage.
Their cages have been right next to each other every since he was separated from the momma at 9 weeks old (would have separated them at 8 weeks but someone refused to learn how to drink water )
We have spent the last MONTH putting daddy and son together in a cage for dust baths 2-3 times per week. There was no signs of fighting, they were supervised every time heavily.
Today i pulled the plug and let them stay in the cage a bunch together, and weve had no issues for a good 5 hours. In fact they're cuddling as i type this.
My HUGE question here is.. If a chinchilla is going to reject a cage mate, how soon does it happen? Is it pretty immediate? Or could they turn on each other randomly in the middle of the night even if theyve been good all day together? Im a very anxious person and i want the absolute BEST safety for my chinnys and thats why i wanted to come here and ask people a bit more experienced in this before letting them spend a first night together while im asleep.
Any info is GREATLY appreciated!!
