I'm too new to comment on how you know when it's too aggressive (we were over conservative when our two fell out for a while and took it really, really slowly) but I did find a towel handy to distract them if they started annoying each other during intro sessions. I too was worried about getting caught in the cross fire. Not sure if it would stop them if they were really fighting though - just thought I'd share as an idea...
