I have 4 boys. I've never checked for hair rings before...I actually only found out about them when I found this forum a few weeks ago. Anyway, one of my boys has been hangin out just a bit today and yesterday...I was hoping the problem would be solved when I got home, but it wasn't. So I atempted it, he was better about it than I expected, but there was hair everywhere, and some kangaroo kicks to start. Once I started he just laid back and let me do it. Which was a learning experisnce for both of us. I don't know if he calmed down because he knew I was helping...of beccause I had his manlyness between my fingers lol. There was a hair ring, from his own fur. And he went back into himself...with some help. Anyway...this was new, and I had to share it with other chin people.

We should share our first hair ring check stories! Lol!

The first time is scary. It's a very good thing that you knew what it was and didn't have to go to the vet to find out. I hate removing hair rings so much, but it just has to be done. The first breeder, who I bought a chin from, told me about them so at the very least I knew what it was or I would have ran right to the emergency vet.

I had the unfortunate luck of having that experience, Susan.

Since I found Mr. Whiskers in a petstore and knew nothing of the forums, we made an urgent run to see Dr. Fitzgerald when one day, Mr. Whiskers' penis was sticking out and wouldn't retract. Luckily, it was nothing serious -- only embarrassing for Mr. Whiskers AND me!!!

I just recently learned about them. I found this forum only 2 or 3 weeks ago...knew bothing before that. I've been reading and reading and reading and asking a ton of questions! I knew what the problem was right away...I just hoped he'd solve the problem himself...as I've seen him do befor before it became a problem... but no luck there. But. Actually I'm glad I got to try it out...just so I can calm down about it. It really wasn as bad as I was expecting. I wish he would have been as calm as the one in the video on here tho. Lol there was hair everywhere! I needed someone to be here just to wipe the hair ut of my face.

Do most people use some sort of lube? I did. He seemed dry and not chpped, but not smooth...but I hav no idea what it usually feels like. I thought the lube would make everything feel nive for him since he's been hangin out since yesterday.

Also do most people check? Or just when there seems to be a problem?

I keep a close eye on my boys' undersides just in case. You're right...it's usually just a little dry and can require a little assistance in getting everything back to normal. I use jojoba oil usually to help get everything back into balance. There can just be so much fur wrapped around things down there. Just today I found a male that was having an issue - the chins are all losing a lot of fur lately and it gets wrapped around in the strangest places.

I check mine once or twice a month, KY jelly works well since its water soluble and non-toxic in case the chin wants to clean it off.

I just did my first check on Zim and happily there was nothing to find but man there sure was a lot of kicking and fur flying lol. I need to learn some voodoo magic so he can stay as still as the chin did in that video I saw on here, you snake charmers! :p ahahaha

Lol yeah my guy kicked a lot at first. I just kept talking to him really calmly and he finally stopped. I should have worn goggles with all of the hair everywhere! He didn't lose big clumps, but he lost a ton! It's amazing how much they have!

I want to check my boy...need guidance...

I just read about this a couple days ago and have been dreading it, lol. I don't know how Sunny will react to me checking his private area. I've only seen him cleaning his penis once since I got him last winter. It was all the way out when we went in the room and my daughter started laughing. I wasn't sure what to do, if I should leave him alone, so we left for 15 minutes and came back...but then I read about hair rings so here I am:(

How do I go about it?! How do I hold him and get his penis out?! And if there is hair, how do I remove it?! I don't want to hurt him. I wanted to ask you all because I never know what sites to trust and my favorite-Mistywaterwoman's, I couldn't find anything about hair rings. I need help:( If you have a website or thread on this site you can give me, or if you could just explain the process, I'd seriously appreciate it. I want to make this as easyy and quick for Sunny and me both! I also read above that if he does have one, after pulling it off, I can use Jojoba Oil or KY Jelly to help get things back to normal. If you could explain how to apply that, I'd also appreciate it. Thanks so much! I know I'm a pain, but I just want him to be happy and healthy, and I trust you guys! Help me! I wish you could come here and do it for me, lol, but you can't, so hopefully I can handle this myself! :cry3:

Thank you soooo much Lynn! It's easier to learn watching someone do it. He looks like he's been checked a few times, though. Sunny...he's going to freak:( but it's important so he'll have to let me. I'll pick up the Jojoba oil or the KY Jelly at Walmart today and check him tonight. If he goes too crazy, I'll have to wait for my sister to come over to help, cause he's scared of my father and my mom's scared of him, lol!

Thanks so much!

Thanks ticklechin. The closeup one gives great detail how to do it without hurting my little bugger. You all are such great help:kiss:

Is it sticking out now? If not, I wouldn't check. I would only check when there's an issue...personally. they dint enjoy it(lat least mine) and neither do I. I've only had to check that once....

I prefer to not let it get to the point were it is sticking out, I get them removed once every couple of weeks. I always find one or two with 7 boys. When I had malo chins they needed to be checked weekly-malo chin males do not clean the package so Mom has to do it with warm water and a cloth.

Just did mine on Handbag last night for the first time. Thanks Dawn for a great video.

Handbag and I have a new, more intimate relationship now. lol

I have found hair rings on several boys that weren't showing any issue. Just because it hasn't gotten bad enough that it is hanging out, it still can't be at all comfortable. They really do need to be checked at least once a month.
