How can anyone think this is ok?

Wow some people are total morons. It's not like you are bottle feeding a puppy or something like that. It's a little, bitty kit that is so fragile (not that bottle feeding a puppy would be easy either). One little wrong move and you could seriously hurt the poor thing. While I'm glad that I got Bella as a kit (oddly enough I'm glad I got to experience her being a pain), kits are not easy. Bella has only just started to calm down but she still bites me sometimes. I think an adult would be easier. And I would never bottle feed unless I had to. The kit needs to bond and learn from its mother. And I would be terrified that I wouldn't be adequate and the poor baby would get seriously ill or die.

ha. someone should tell that woman that they'd like to marry her daughter while she's still in high school for bonding purposes. why are people so dumb? and can't we stop THEM from breeding?!

I've had Crash since he was a kit (10 weeks). I love it when he bums for scritches and treats and always have...

But I cried tears of joy the day Nova (adopted as a 3 year old, formerly abused, very skittish) climbed onto my arm of his own free will and let me rub his chin.

If you have to endanger the animal's health to "bond with it", you're clearly not thinking of the animal's best interests and, I think, don't deserve it's affection.

I had a young lady here this morning that bought one of my chinchillas. While she was here, she and her mother were telling me about the girl's friend and her experience buying a chin. Apparently, the breeder that her friend went to encouraged the girl and her family to by a 5 week old kit (taken straight from mom). This way they could bottle feed it for a week or two and it would bond with them better than if they waited. Bad enough, right? It gets worse! The breeder charged them extra for the service (?) of selling them a 5 week old.

This is a breeder that has been discussed on here a few times. What will these clowns do next?

Would this be the "chin mill" you are talking about?

It's probably the same breeder that sold the 6 week kit to xoxo?

I have 2 - 3 1/2 male kits that were a little bit on the wild side I ended up putting them with 2 older males which seem to calm them down.

Bonding is just a matter of how much time you spend with them.

It is not easier to bond with a kit. Kits are too busy developing their own personalities and trying to get away with x, y, and z to care about forming a bond with anyone. It's much easier to bond with an adult that has a more developed brain that can decipher the nuances of human emotion.

I've gotten most of my chins when they were newly weaned (8-12 weeks old). I don't think I'm at any disadvantage by not getting them younger. I have the next 20+ years to bond with them.

I agree with you Tab. I currently have two 2-year-olds and a 7-month-old. While my baby is friendly, she definitely does her own thing. She begs and takes scritches when she thinks she's getting a toy. But she usually doesn't like human contact just for the sake of it.

On the other hand both of my 2-year-olds are more personable. They'll sit as close to me as they can while I read out loud. They love engaging me in co-grooming sessions. Lady even enjoys being held on occasion. In my mind this is a bonded chinchilla-human relationship. I love my baby, and I know she'll get there someday, but right now she's just too busy exploring her world.

I have had people ask that...and lots of people wanting a female 8 week old to put with their male. One set was lost their last female at 6 months likely from being too young (none from me) couldnt understand why. I explained the dangers of such a young female and thought they were coming by to get a male for their chinchilla.

They didn't show to the appoinment so I called and they responded with since you didn't have any young females ,we found another breeder. I feel bad for that little girl. The thing that made me crazy was after all the time I spent explaining why it was a bad Idea they assumed I was just saying it because I didn't have any. I had several young females I wasn't bsing them to get them to buy from me I was worried about thier intensions
