About a day ago, my mother came over to visit. She loves my chin, Leo, so we had him running around in his little "chinchilla room". I left to use the restroom, and when I got back, Leo was on the ground twitching and bleeding. She basically stepped on him/kicked him in the face. It didn't help that this was at 8pm on a Sunday, and all the vets in our area were closed. Thankfully, she knew a vet who was qualified to treat chinchillas, and he came to the clinic on his day off, and looked at Leo, without even asking for any payment. Thankfully, none of his bones were broken, and he was basically just in shock, and had a terrible nose bleed. The vet gave Leo a shot to stop any swelling that might occur, and we went home. Now he's starting to seem a little bit better, although, he seems dazed and confused. What worries me is that he still has occasional blood coming from his nose, and he won't open his eyes, and he's so confused I have to hold his food for him, or else he just drops it and makes this pitiful little chirp/sigh. I'm just really worried because this is the first time Leo's been injured. Any advice/tips from more experienced owners would be greatly appreciated. Also, I apologize for the lengthy explanation.

He's definitely in pain and needs pain meds from the vet. I'm hoping someone with more experience will chime in soon! I'm very scared for your little guy. This doesn't sound good at all. :(

This is very severe and slightly resembles another situation recently here, although I'm sure the issue is much different.

He needs to be seen to see if there is bleeding in his brain. Did the vet do an xray or just feel his nose? A "bloody nose" will NOT cause the symptoms you're describing and this chin needs a very competent chin vet immediately. It sounds like other than extreme pain he probably has other issues going on. I've had chins get bloody noses from running into things, they just bounce back up and keep going.

And not to place blame but I would not leave your mom alone with chins again...

Vet... now.

Please get your chinchilla to a vet asap. He looks and seem lethargic from the descriptions you gave. I understand that you've already taken him to a vet, but unless x-rays were done you have no idea knowing if there is anything internal going on.

Hi, how are you? And how is Leo? Sometimes without fractures alot of vital organ damage can still have taken place, your vet was right to administer drugs to lessen the swelling because like skin, bruising occurs in all organs in trauma.

It's hard to judge whether the blood is originating from the mouth/brain or respiratory tract, and mostly he will need very good supportive care.

Since he isn't functioning well enough to feed himself, please take him back to the vet or another vet, it will take injuries time to show up sometimes, and this may be the time to have another professional look-over. The pain will be substantial and he may need adjustment to his painkilling regime. Bless him and how are you? hope you're holding together fine.

Don't forget to look after yourself too :) We will be here for you

Please get him to the vet if you haven't already. And please keep us posted on how he is doing. Poor little guy, I hope that the vet can help him.

Leo's been feeling a bit better lately. Moving around more, not as clumsy, etc. And thankfully, it's been confirmed that there's no internal bleeding or broken bones. The main problem is the pain from his nose, and the emotional/physical shock. He tries to bite at everyone except me and my Grandpa now, and he never did that before. Also, I don't plan on leaving Mom alone with him again, even though it was an accident. She's killed about 14 of my pets on accident when I was younger, before I realized it was just better not to keep animals in her house. And no, I don't live with her anymore.
