Hi all, I have a 7 year old hedgehog, she has swollen face and I was wondering if I could give her childrens tylonel to ease the pain until I can take her to the vet. The tylonel is liquid form.

Thanks.

Hun he needs a vet. I don't even know if you can give tylenol to a hedgehog but from the looks of the pics in he other thread tylenol wont do any justice. I know you want to relieve the pain but he really needs to be seen by a vet.

A vet as soon as possible, only a vet can tell you what pain meds to use. There are always vets open even if they the emergency type. Don't be cruel, take her to a vet. Would you be happy hanging out like that? She is likely in significant pain and needs some compassion not random human medications.

I don't think she is being cruel I think she is jst trying to ease pain before she gets to go to the vet, she did say she is going to go to the vet she is just trying to make her more comfortable untill then.

I suggest finding someone who can rescue her and take her to the vet. She's got to be suffering from pain. It's unfair to her to continue in pain, but realize that it was your responsibility to take care of her when you got her. She can't help herself, you have to.

I'm not badgering you, I just worry for the poor hedgie. It's hard for us to fork out the money for our pets, but if we can't, we don't need the pets in the beginning.

This poor animal is suffering. In my opinion, if your mother wasn't prepared for the expense of a vet visit then she shouldn't have gotten a pet. Allowing this poor animal to continue suffering like this is just not ok. At the least, try calling your local animal shelter or SPCA, surrender her to them. They will determine what is wrong and give her vet care, or euthanize her humanely. I understand you are in a tough spot, but you need to talk to your mom and make her understand that it is wrong and cruel to leave your pet in pain. If you and your family really love her then you will do what is best for her. If you can't afford a vet visit yourself, take her to someone who can.

We've all had tough times, okay? When we got her we could take care of her perfectly or else we wouldn't continue to buy pets, it's not like we're animal abusers... we didn't expect this to happen right after we booked a flight to travel out of the country. There is really nothing I can do personally, I can't get my mom to take her to the vet, I can't force her to do anything. She says "she is not in pain, she's eating and drinking and doesn't show any signs of pain." I'm with everyone else when they say it's cruel... I told my mom she IS in pain but she doesn't want to hear it, I just need real advice on what to do.

There's no advice that we can really give you that will help. The vet is pretty much your only option to find out what is going on. We can't diagnose the problem, nor can we give a plan of action, because we really don't know whats wrong with her. You can make sure she's eating softer food, monitor how she eats and make sure she's comfortable. The main thing is realizing that you can't take care of her, so you need to find someone who can. Call local rescues and see if they can provide help for you.

On a side note - if you're moving to a different country, don't you have to take the hedgie to the vet before she gets on a plane? I thought that animals needed a clean bill of health and a vet certificate before flying, or atleast in the sugar glider world we do.

We're not moving to Norway, we're visiting.
I will talk to my mom about euthanizing her, but I think my brother & mother have a problem with letting go when they need to.

I don't even own hedgies and I can tell that is not normal. The poor thing must be in horrible pain! I'm not quite sure how anyone can think it wouldn't be?

Even with not having much money, it's very inhumane to let it suffer like that. Honestly you could get charged with animal neglect to not give your pet the vet help it needs.

You're not really helping me, I need advice... not "you can get charged with animal neglect" I already knew that. I'm sixteen, I can't magically take her to the vet and pay, like I said only my mother can. I think at this point I'm SOL, but thank you.

So focus on what you can do. You can call around for a rescue, maybe put an ad on CL for help. Go sell/pawn something/jewlery consign some of your clothes... something for enough money to put it to sleep. I guess this is just me but if I HAD to I would put it out of it's misery all by myself.

I understand that you personally can't do anything if you don't have any money saved up. But perhaps you can point the animal neglect out to your mom.

If nothing else the kindest option for this poor hedgie is to drop it off at a shelter, or vets office and surrender it. To leave it like this, even if it is eating is not humane at all. So if it were me, I would drop it off somewhere if you can't get them to understand that it honestly needs help.

I'm going to convince my mom to have her euthanized, I feel like crying because I know she IS in pain but my mom will not listen... she's being ignorant. Her leg is bleeding now, I just checked on her. I will show her to my mom again and we'll go from there.

Thanks for everyones replies...

I wish I was as strong as you but I can't kill animal personally, even if it means putting it out of it's misery.

Call your local vet...alot of vets have some called care credit or something like that for people who cant afford the vet bills i think its pretty much a payment plan type thing
