Hey everyone

l just had a few general questions... I want to give my chinchilla, Jynx some healthy treats and was just wondering what options there were. I've been giving him dried rose hips, puffed wheat and oats. I don't know what the deal is with raisins but I haven't been giving them to him so far.
This is a wicked forum by the way :)

I've been feeding my chins OxBow Barley Biscuits, they come in cute heart shaped sizes and I split it in half to give one half to each chin once a day.

I don't give anything like raisins/wheats/oats as their poop would become irregular and it doesn't seem to help them have a good fur quality.

Also, I give them supplements from Oxbow (Multi-vitamin and digestive support) as well and it is in a way a treat for them apart from their daily pellets and hay intake.

Plain cherrios and plain shredded wheat are good too. Some dried herbs, like from Fuzzies Kingdom, are also good. Raisins and other dried fruits are too high in sugar, and that's why we discourage giving them to chins.

My 5 mo male only gets willow sticks along with his pellets and timothy hay. My yr old female occasionally gets a plain cheerio or a few old fashioned oat flakes.

I give my girls that are old enough for treats crushed rose hips or oats. They also enjoy apple sticks enough to give those as treats as well. Remember you shouldn't give treats if they're under 6 months. Raisins are not good because they are high in sugar.

I know you're not supposed to give treats to chins under six months of age... Are rose hips considered a threat? I have a hanging toy and a toss toy with rose hips inside and I don't want to give them to my boy if he shouldn't have them. He will be about 10 weeks old when I pick him up. If I store those items with the rose hips in a container with a lid, will they stay good until he's old enough or do they go bad after a while?

Rose hips are a treat. The reason for not giving treats is you want your baby to grow strong on pellets and hay. If they get treats than they may not eat as much of the good stuff.

We never gave the boys raisins but I did give a little piece of dried papaya to Edgar when he was an only chin. My error caused him to get an imbalance that took about two weeks to fix. I still feel bad about this and it's why sugary sweets aren't good.
