As long as we are a nation of gun loving idiots this will keep happening. I thought Californians were animal loving people? I could imagine this happening in Tx but not Cali :(

It's a sad story, but this has nothing to do with being a "gun loving idiot" and everything to do with being an irresponsible and ignorant person. We have guns in our home, but nobody here in our home would consider shooting anything living and breathing outside of self defense.

I agree with those who have said that the zebras should be returned to their proper owner, and allow them to dispose of as they see appropriate. It's disgusting that there are irresponsible and ignorant people out there. I thought CA had pretty stringent gun laws?

I knew that would irritate someone but I'm not apologizing for that statement. I also know some responsible gun owners but I have reasons for the way I feel and I'm too tired to go into it right now.

So many things wrong with these stories.

'They are wild animals,' he said. 'How are you going to catch them?'

This was one of the ranchers justifications for shooting the zebras. Um, maybe how they originally caught them? It's not like all zoo animals were born there...zebras do actually live in Africa. He could have fired a warning shot to scare them off his property until someone from the zoo got there. And I have no idea why they would think they can take someone else's animal and make a rug out of it, it's not their zebras--case closed. But it is concerning that the zebras escaping seems to be a somewhat frequent occurrence.

The Oakland thing--ugh. The dog was in a fenced area. Were the police in or out of the fence because shooting a dog through a fence would be pretty idiotic, but I'll assume they were on the inside of the fence and the dog came out of the house barking. It's sad and I agree, the officer who shot Gloria should have come to apologize, not his captain.

We have trigger happy people here, this story made me sick also.

R U FRIGGIN SERIOUS!!!! I mean she was a yellow lab for god's sake! and 11 yrs old who was also arthritic, doesn't move like a ferocious predator! AND dogs do tend to growl and get nervous when you ENTER THEIR PROPERTY! There is something mentally wrong with that officer who shot that dog, esp 3 times. I well trained individual, who may or may not like canines, should know the signs of aggressive behavior and "aggressive breeds" (I don't believe in the aggressive breed law, I have owned APBTs and Rotties). ALSO, a well trained officer should know how to wound, not KILL SHOT, an aggressive animal first IF it is last resort in a life/death situation. Apparently this moron doesn't know his duties or responsibilities in his profession which includes all of the above and taken responsibility for messing up (better choice of wording used here) and apologizing like a MAN and respectable civilian.

As you can see I am overly aggitated by this article more than the other one, because this is a person who puts on a uniform and represents something more than a regular civilian. They are suppose to protect and SERVE. Now what if that was a child or innocent and the officer shot them by mistake because they did not take the necessary precautions as they R TRAINED to do?! I am sure not only his boss would be in front of that lady, but the very officer himself, and city officials. The excuses his boss was claiming are excuses bc bad press does not look good for any precinct and can be reprimanded for not following proper procedure.

Ok sorry I am done ranting. It really upsets me that people accept this behavior and attitudes from the uniforms, and any officials or "role models."
