I am thinking about purchasing a few fleece liners for my FN cage but idk do you guys put anything underneath to absorb the urine? also to clean do you just machine wash and good to go? Thanks Melissa h

I don't put anything underneath, I'm pretty sure the fleece does the job itself. You can also get a litter pan if the chinchilla(s) like to pee in one corner of the cage. And yes, just switch the liners every few days and machine wash and machine dry them. I highly recommend you get some. :)

all my liners are just double layered fleece, with nothing else. i change the liner every couple days.

i soak my liners in a bucket with hot water and a bit of laundry soap for a while before they hit the washing machine, or else i find the pee stains don't come out completely. liners go in with either my clothes or a load of towels, whichever is ready for the wash that day. it is not advised to use fabric softener, as that decreases the absorbency of the fleece. i use a dryer sheet because i get really static filled clothes otherwise, and i'm sure my boys wouldn't want to be shocked by their fleece!

i also have a litter pan in each cage, even if Rhino does tend to pee on his fleece nearly as often as he does in the litter bowl. Guss is my good boy, lol, and only pees in the bowl, but that's most likely due to him not having a liner yet, and his cage floor is a bare metal pan.

I would definitely consider getting some.
They are much easier, clean up wise.

I also have a question:
My chin seems to take a liking to his bedding. Meaning, he tries to eat it. Luckily I caught him in the act and look out the litter pan.
Does anyone know of good, chin-safe bedding/litter from petco?

Thanks.

what bedding are you using Rebecca? most of the members here use either kiln dried pine or aspen shavings, which are safe for chins. i use pine.

The bedding is fir and aspen shavings.
I was thinking about seeing to get kiln dried pine, but I can't find any online.
In petco, they just have Carefresh, and I've heard that it's not the best.

petsmart carries kd pine shavings. there are two petsmarts in New York. one is at 632 Broadway, and the other is at 517 East 117th Street.

A lot of people put a layer of flannel or have a quilted backing to help absorb urine. I make liners for some people and always put a layer of flannel in the middle. Fleece acts like a wick and will pull it into the middle. It helps if there's something there to soak it up.

I sewed my liners as two layers of fleece with a terry cloth towel in the middle. If I make more I'm going to try what people on a guinea pig site do… they get recycled denim “blankets” from U-haul and sew those as a middle layer. Everyone seems to swear that it keeps the smell down (GP smell a LOT) and that it dries really quickly.

Oh and to keep static down I don’t use dryer sheets, I have dryer balls

They work really well.

I recently made pillowcase style fleece covers for my FN shelves and levels. I haven't bothered with putting a towel or anything In the middle. I might end up adding another piece of fleece to the middle if I need to but right now I haven't had any problems. My chin loved to dig underneath the fleece so the new covers solved that problem. I have extra covers and fleece that I switch every couple days to keep her cage clean. I just wash and dry them with my laundry. I find it a lot easier to clean cages and it's am expense you no longer have. Even though bedding isn't that much it still adds up over time.

i've herad some people put baby diapers in them [the old fastioned one.lol]. i dind't like the fleece liners because i found that the urine smell was a pain to get out.. but everyone has a different opinion.

goodl uck
