My male and female were in the same cage but separated for 2 years, then I took the divider down and they lived together for about 5 months. One day the male just started pinning the female in the corner, he was trying to breed. It was hours of him stalking her, and he had NEVER done that before, so I decided to get him neutered (I don't want to breed).

The neuter was 7 days ago. I tried putting them together again today and my female began attacking the male...he lost SO much fur :( They are both kacking and standing on the hind legs. I have them separated again in 2 different cages so they can sniff each other out...but they continue to fight through the cages!

Is this normal? Is there anything I can do? They loved each other just 7 days ago!

They could be fighting because of the smell. If he was neutered, he's going to have a distinct vet smell to him.

Give them a while to settle down. Get them away from each other. Letting them fight through the bars won't help when you're ready to reintroduce them. Let him heal, for one thing, so he's up to bar when you do try to introduce them, then start an introduction like you would with new chins.

Wait until you can give a dust bath. I know after our male was neutered he smelled funny even to me, and his mom would kack at him and fuss anytime he moved close to the side of the cage next to hers. Once he was able to dust (I used the same dust bath for both) and ready to go back in she didn't even fuss at him and they are best buddies. I know I was told to wait at least 6 weeks as they can still have active sperm and that way he was fully healed.

I was told he could get a dust bath after 5 days, go back in the cage with the female after 7 days, and I could put the wheels back in the cage after 10 days. He has had 2 dust baths, and I also use the same bath house for both.

When I first introduced them they hated each other. But when I had wire seperating their large cage, they would sneak onto each other's side and get along fine. Should I put the wire divider back up again?

I would for a while. Give them time to get used to each other again. Treat it just like you would an intro between two new chins. :)

Forgive my ignorance, but how has she not gotten pregnant through all this? Is it possible that she's pregnant now and may just be moody with hormonal changes?

I'm not sure how she has not gotten pregnant yet, but I think she may have the night the male wouldn't leave her alone. I know it is too soon to tell (two weeks ago). Her eating and drinkin has not changed yet...and she lays on her side occasionally anyway.

I'll put the divider back up (even though the female ALWAYS outsmarts me and get to the other side!!!) for a while and see how that goes!

If there is a chance she will get to him then I would find a way to prevent that before he ends up dead. I have also read, and am not sure if it was a fallacy, that a male after neutering needs 30 days before being put back in with a female since he could still impregnate a female during that time. As I said, I am not sure that what I read was true or not, just mentioning it in case you want to do a little research. I did read that the vet said fine after 7 days.

Thanks everyone! I put the divider back up in the cage. My male is a little upset that the female is still being a bully! I am hoping over time in the same cage (separated) they'll get along. I will follow everyone's advise on here and keep them separated for at least 30 days.
If my beautiful girl is pregnant, I'm sure I'll be back on here asking questions!

I personally was told to take 30 days before putting the male back with a female, cause that's about the time it takes to get rid of all the 'hormones' in his system.

It's obvious that's she pregnant, boys + girls = babies. Instinct. :winkers:

We have exactly the same problem! My bonded pair were together peacefully for 3 years and after only 3 days in side by side cages after a neuter she took over the cage and attacked him when he came near her! It was really nasty between them even in neutral areas so we have been trying to hold them about a foot apart daily during treat time to help them bond. Tonight we tried taking his urine-covered blanket and rubbing it over her. She immediately became submissive and then he started chasing her and dominance mounting. Even with him rearing and kacking at her she went right up to him and laid out on the floor and went to sleep - how bizarre! We put them back in their separate cages for now and will try cutting whiskers tomorrow and more neutral play. If we can get them to a peaceful place we plan on switching cages (so that he can take over the main cage again) and then putting her back with him after a day. I'm not going to take my eyes off them just in case...

Acutally, Boy+ Girls= Babies, is not always true.... Take my breeding pair... not in two years I've had her has she had any babies, im looking to get a new girly sometime this year.

I've noticed my girl puts up with my boy in their shared cage, but during play time together, she is nasty to him, and he always tires himself out chasing her around. But they always go back in the cage just fine...

Just because it doesn't always happen doesn't mean chins that shouldn't be bred should put put together unaltered.
