I wanted to make some treats for my chinchilla out of some poplar wood I have and was just wonder if food coloring is safe for them? If so, how do I dye it? Do I just soak the wood in some dye and then let it dry? Any suggestions?

Yep food coloring is safe. Some say to soak the wood, but you don't have to. You can take a wet cloth (that you don't mind being ruined) and dip it into whatever color you want and just buff it onto the wood. It dries so much faster than soaking it.

Thank you. And the dye is the ones that you see in the store that are in those yellow boxes? Just kinda nervous:)

Yep. That's the kind I used.

this question reminded me of one i had while at petsmart the other day. i was looking for more chew toys to buy and i saw some that were labeled "fruit flavored wooden chews". is anything "flavored" good for them? i know some people dye wood with koolaid so i wasnt too sure if these would be ok.

i found a link to the ones i found.

i know there are tons of people her who sell chew toys -and i'll probably order from them instead- but is this a good/safe option?

Not knowing what kind of wood it is would make me not buy it, even though it may be non-toxic there are still several non-safe woods for chins out there.

You just need to varify what they use to flavor the wood with. There are many items they could use. Some most chins owners wouldnt (items with sugar). Koolaid is ok but you want to verify what they use and what type of wood of course.
