I am just curious how frequently others wear some form of dusk mask while doing chinnie chores.

I didn't use to but now I use a dust mask when I'm cleaning cages and when I dust. My lungs feel tight and my throat always hurts the next day when I don't wear one.

I never do unless I'm sick and no one else can feed them. Other than that it doesn't bother me terribly.

Is this is dust mask or a mask only to be worn as the sun sets? If its the former, I dont usually use them. If its the latter....I dunno exactly what that would look like....

I SHOULD wear one whenever I am in the chin room..but I don't..always when I dust, and about 50% of the time when i'm cleaning--almost always wear one if its the cleaning after a dust bath.

I had a really good thread going on chins n quills, but i cant seem to find it..

Anyways, i try to always wear one on cage & dusting days, but sometimes find myself forgetting my own rule. =]

I have a few different kinds, i have like a big painting type one & the doc type masks. I know it may seem silly to wear one, but i KNOW the amount of dust im taking in during my stay in their room is crazy! The dust, fur, hay dust feed dust, bedding dust, etc.... ewww that CANNOT be good for ones lungs!
Its also nice to be able to have them on hand when im sick & need to feed & water the animals.

 ok haha I got busted. Wow I guess running on 4-5 hrs. of sleep every night is catching up with me and turning me slightly dyslexic, how embarrassing. Or maybe I need to wear a dust mask more often! Didn't even notice it- could a mod please edit the title if it's not too much trouble?

I think it's interesting; we all know we should wear something, but I know more often than not I don't. I never really thought it was that big of a deal until I was convinced to wear one once just while cleaning cages and realized how much stuff was stuck to the outside of it by the time I was finished. Ever since then I know better but am always thinking to myself "oh just this once won't matter, I'm just going to dust _____ really quickly, just going to clean a couple pans, etc.." I knew I wasn't alone out there, but figured we should probably have a thread to perhaps remind people/give us all an extra push to take care of ourselves

No problem....taken care of...

never wear one. keep on meaning to get some for when i am sick but always forget so i have hubby feed/water etc when i am not well.

I never do, my husband does, but I just hate wearing them. There was an article in the MCBA mag. about how important it is, so we all should!

I ALWAYS wear one when I'm sick, but usually wear it when I clean cages. I just recently found out I'm allergic to every living creature (which I believe includes humans at some times), so although it doesn't help tons, it does help a little.

I think a dust mask is a great idea. All that hay. ACHOO!
I'm getting some for cleaning days at least.

I didn't when I first got my chins and would immediately get into a coughing attack afterwards. Now I have to wear a mask due to my allergies.

I never wear a dust mask. I get a stuffy nose after cage cleaning but I'm never in the shed when they really get rolling in the dust so the dust has never bothered me.

Wearing a mask when you're sick IMO doesn't help anything. They even told people when the swine flu hit that those masks are meant to keep dust and visible things out of your lungs but it doesn't block the transfer of germs. Not to mention...we don't have common zoonotic viruses. ;)
