And I'm not saying definitely don't get them, that's up to you. I got my first chin from a lady just breeding her two pet store chins. So chins from bad breeders and pet stores need homes too. It's just a thing where you can't win. You get a great pet, but the breeder/store then just gets more in.

I agree. I just feel bad because I passed up a BEAUTIFUL pair of male kits from an amazing breeder who's on these forums because I had my heart set on mosaics, and now I feel like it was the wrong decision.

But I think if she looks healthy or not when I see her in person, and after he answers all of my questions, I'll know what to do.

Got an email back!!

He said "I dont let them bathe until theyre over 12 weeks. Just my preference. Their fur doesn't get REALLY soft until they go through their first molt."

So I guess that's why her fur looks so bad! And why it seems like it's been getting worse when it wasn't bad at all when I first put the deposit down.

Isn't it hard for them to learn how to bathe if they don't do it early on? Don't they have to learn it from their mother or other chinchillas? I thought they could bathe soon after birth? Arg!

But he says she's 100% healthy. And after hearing she's NEVER dust bathed, I'm sure she is healthy but her coat sure isn't!

What should I say? Should I tell him something? I'm so confused here.

Hey Gabby.

I am totally new to chins myself, so I can't offer you any advice/suggestions, :(

I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am that you're going through all of this. It really is a crappy situation.

No matter what you decide, I know you're going to make the best decision for you and future chin(s). You obviously are a very caring pet-owner, and the fact that you've done so much research and invested so much speaks volumes.

Somehow...it will work itself out. :hug3:

Maybe I am backwards but I have never heard a breeder refer to a chin "molting", they usually use the term "prime"???

If he is dusting the mother, not sure how he is keeping the babies out of the dust bath, around here it is a free for all when I put the dust baths in, like one big pile up!

Thank you so much! I hope I make the right decision. For right now, I'm just going to wait until I see her in person and if she looks healthy, I'll take her. If not, I won't. I think that's the best decision for me and for her.

I was thinking that, too. I was wondering if maybe he thought I didn't know what "priming" means so he just said "molting" so I'd know what he was talking about? I know he also breeds a lot of birds, so that could have something to do with it, too.

I wouldn't worry too much about her fur until you see her in person. If he hasn't been dusting then that could explain it, also babies fur does not look like an adults fur and often it is a mess from nesting under the mother and nursing. Take a deep breath and go in with an open mind, do what you think is best.

Thank you! I'm not going to stress about it until I see her. I still have 10 days and that would be a lot of stressing. haha! So I'm going to calm myself down and prepare for their arrival and hope that everything will work out. :)
