I have a female chinchilla who is 9 months old, which i know is close about time when she is mature to breed. today i came home noticed a strong oder from the cage, as well as a wet spot on one of the shelves. when I checked her, i noticed a brownish/clear discharge that seems to becoming from her vagina. I looked online with a few different possibilities. I do have a male in with her and wasnt sure if this was something from her just being in heat, if it happened when the male tried to mate with her, or if it is something more serious. She is acting completely normal, still eating, running , jumping, she seems to be trying to clean it up, but she nothing seems to be abnormal besides the discharge. I'm wondering if someone has advice, i thought about cleaning the cage and waiting a day or two to see if symptoms change.

Chins can start breeding at the age of 3 months...

Without seeing it, we don't really help. Brown usually means old blood, it could be normal or it could be an infection which will need a vet.

The thing that bothers me is 'the strong odor' Sounds like something is definitely wrong to me and I would get the chin to the vet ASP

With my chin Caboose, she had white, smelly discharge that was a uterine infection. Oddly and incredibly, it's only flared up slightly once more. But I'd take her in to be safe, my girl was so sick for so long, it's not worth it to wait. We still have to keep a careful eye on her, and always will.

smelly discharge is never good. Time to go to the vet..and as for white smelly discharge that is pyometria and will not clear up without treatment and will eventually kill her, when it goes away and comes back...that is from her opening and closing with her estrus cycle
