One question though: If Adam and I rent this property and sign a lease for 1 year, can the owner sell it out from under us before that time and evict us? I assume people with common courtesy would not, but it's a genuine worry.

Check your tenancy laws but here is how it works in bc: If you have a lease, the landlord is allowed to sell the property BUT the new owners need to honor the terms of the lease. At the end of the lease, they need to provide you with the appropriate notice if they wish for you to move out (most of those reasons involve financial compensation for you). So, as long as your lease is in effect, you do not have to worry about getting evicted.

While having the longest lease possible sounds good in practice, also consider that it puts you on the hook to lose some money if you break the lease early. In bc, landlords are entitled to keep your deposit if this happens. Just some food for thought...

LOL, I pay $1600/month for a two bedroom 1 1/2 bath townhouse. And paid $1650/month for the condo I lived in last year (2 bed, 2bath).

Both places have all appliances (stove, fridge, washer/dryer, etc.) and an attached garage. :)

The most expensive place I lived in was an apartment that was a 2bed, 2bath and after pet rent, it was $1870/month. It was also MUCH smaller than either the condo or townhouse. Nice an expensive here in Sunny Southern California.

LoL. Aww, I remember 2 years ago my 1 bedroom apartment in Yorba Linda cost me $1400 a month. And now I bought a 4 bed 2 bath house here in Texas and my mortgage is $950. I feel like I wasted tons of money when I lived in Orange County.

I live just outside of Vancouver BC and I rent a 2 bedroom house with a huge yard and I only pay 875$ and then just heat, cable and internet

LOL, I'm in Yorba Linda right now. :)

Well, we didn't get the 1 bedroom condo downtown that we loved. We would have, had the guy's brother not changed his mind at the last moment and decided to move in. But you know, family comes first.

So now I have appointments over the course of the next few days to view three 2-bedroom townhouses (ranging from $1100-$1300/month) and one 2-bedroom fully renovated condo ($850/month). The condo is the immediate favorite right now because of the price, interior - fully renovated with newer appliances and hardwood floors, plus in-suite laundry - and the fact they do allow my hedgehogs. The gentleman said he'd have to get a description of the animals and check with the condo board, but small pets are allowed in the building. The only downfall (LOL) to this condo is that it's literally spitting distance from my parents. It makes for easy moving anyway - we can literally walk across a field and be at the front door of the building!

LOL, when I was younger I would have hated living so close to my parents. But over the past few years, it would be SO absolutely wonderful if I lived across the street from them. When I go on overnight trips, I have to lug the fur-crew with me (70 miles north) and then go on my trip. I don't really trust anyone else with my furkids. I know...I'm paranoid. haha

LOL! That's one of the first things that crossed my mind when I found this place. My parents would be maybe 5 minutes away. It would be easy enough for mom to stop over every couple hours and check on the hogs if I didn't want to lug them over there, or she could stay at the place without being too far from her dog. It's a win-win.

That's one of the reason I'm leaving Montreal to be closer to my family... and they can check on Litchi if I need them too!

That is nice, although now that I'm living 2.5 miles from my parents and 1 mile from my mom's work, I've decided that 10 miles is a better distance  My parents are great, but when my mom is always so close it feels a bit like this :hug2: She is respectful of my husband and I, but she thinks nothing of "just stopping by to drop off XYZ" or "just coming over really fast for some computer help."

LOL, that's what ignoring the buzzer is for. I think apartments lend a bit more to the whole privacy thing than houses do - they can't get in if I don't answer the buzzer. haha.
