Hi everybody! I'm new to the site, but not new to chins - I've been a proud chin addict for ten years now. This isn't the place for a proper intro so I'll put that elsewhere, but I have a question:

I'm a member of the FN142 fan club for sure, and my cage is full of custom shelves, houses, etc. The trouble is that since some of the wood is about a year old now, it's beginning to show some wear and tear. It's actually quite mild considering who lives in there, and the chins certainly don't mind, but it just doesn't have that "pristine and perfect" look about it anymore. Also, I'm growing a little bored with looking at a tower of natural pine :D I'm a much bigger fan of colored wood for houses and toys, but so much of it isn't the safest option and it's also expensive. Anyway, I've been considering using safe vegetable dye or Kool-aid to color some of the wood accessories in the cage and make it a little more jazzy, but I'm a little bit concerned about whether or not the color will rub off (especially if, say, they pee on a shelf, which they rarely do) and end up on the chins. Not the end of the world, of course, but if I can avoid ending up with pink or purple chins, that'd be great. :) It doesn't happen with the store-bought things, but then, I'm sure they use a different process in manufacturing. Have any of you colored your own wood and if so, have you had any problems with colorfastness? If so, is there anything I can do to minimize it? Thanks!

If I color my wood I either use food coloring or koolaid. I don't color any shelves though, for the reasons you mentioned. With toys though I haven't had the color come off on the chins.
