I went to the FN thread to check out some set ups. Some bi-level units are kept as 2 & some I guess take out the middle. I only have 1 chinchilla so would it be best to remove the middle? I would just be paranoid of him falling to the bottom. But I'm guessing as long as there are enough ledges he should be fine.

I like the extra floor space with the center left in. Gives me more places for the house, all the other furniture and the toss toys. It is strictly a personal choice.
Like obcsed I prefer the extra floor space the center gives for extra stuff. And I regard it as a safety feature, less distance to fall means less chance of serious injury when she has a less than graceful moment.
I eventually took out the middle level of my FN, the little buggers chewed the fleece where the opening is so the plastic pan was exposed 
. I now have wood shelves and perches, one of the half cage width plastic shelves, as well as hammocks overlapping midway down the cage so they really can't fall too far.
