I purchased 2 heavy stone tiles, 'chillers'. They are HEAVY. Can I just set them on 2 of the shelves?? Or should I put them on the floor? Don't want them to slide off and fall... although I can hardly imagine that happening, as they are so heavy... what's the best way to use those?
Thanks!
Laurie

I would put them on the floor unless you get some industrial strength velcro to keep it fastened to the shelf. Trust me, if chins want to move something, they will! They always redecorate the cage if they don't like how I do it.

Ditto what you said!! I woke up one morning to my girls wood house at the bottom of the cage!! This is wood and it's huge and heavy!! Thank goodness neither got hurt but now it is glued to the shelf and used a wing nut and fastened it to the cage!! LOL!! They will rearrange things!!

I use actual slabs of granite I get from a local kitchen place, so mine are HEAVY. I always keep them on the floor of the cage for this reason. If you have a chin chiller, or something small and thin like that it could go on a shelf, but anything heavy just isn't worth the risk.

Are chin coolers something they should have? I saw these at the petstore but wasn't sure. Do they actually use them?

You don't have to have them. They work good though for if you power goes out temporarily in the summer. I would keep a couple in my freezer just in case the power went out, and then if it did I could take them out of the freezer and put them in the cage if it was hot out.

But during the cooler months I use them in my cages to cover part of their wire bottomed cage so they have more solid surface to sit on.

You can get them cheaper at hardware stores, just buy the 12" x 12" marble tiles.

But they aren't really a necessity.

Marble or Granite will keep cooler than porcelain or ceramic tiles. If you have a local granite slab yard try checking them out to see if you can get a couple of samples. They may not be huge, but sometimes they are free and pretty colors too :). Marble is softer than Granite and a different make up of minerals. Granite is harder and will degrade in less time than Marble. Both will hold a stain as they are naturally semi porous materials. Acid in OJ will eat at both, so chin pee may eat at them too. But, it would probably take many many years to really affect them much. If you want to sanitize the chiller scrub it down with hot water and toss it in the dish washer no soap. I use peroxide on mine before the dishwasher steam also. They are rocks so do let them cool off before stowing them in the ice chest or they will crack. Don't know if you ever split soft ball size rocks as a kid by heating in the oven and cooling in the freezer but you can do it. It doesn't take nearly as much effort with thin slices of marble or granite.

You can also try our Flagstone Perches. They work just great as chillers and your chins get to have a ton of fun playing on them all the time.

The only problem is the shipping :hair: why can't they be lighter or you be closer to WA State?????

Now I have another question. . . .
on some of your toys you use plastic beads, wouldn't this not be a good idea?

Some like them, some never sit on them. I use them mainly to keep my fleece down. I have several kitchen places around me, so I head there any time I need some granite. Most places will give you scraps for free.
