Im not trying to hate on rats i love them even though I dont breed them. But if someone interested wants me to site them the MCBA newsletter/magazine year/month and page where it contains the information that I took that out from I can. I have always considered it a credible and reliable source for where I get information.
The prophoryn, yes I know I spell it wrong a lot, I was told by two vets that it indicates stress when it becomes visable and is a precursor to respatory illiness and other stuff. They said the more stressed out a rat gets or scared from trauma, the more they make. I assumed it to be true because on my rats ( when I was doing this I had a lot of them) when they would get sick, as it happens sometimes, they would always increase their production of this by a LOT.
I have also read in other places that rats you buy at the store and rats in the wild, which I have NEVER encountered, I am just saying what I have READ , that they are able to transmit diseases to chinchillas, when I have read chinchilla information regarding other animals. Again, if anyone is interested in the most credible source most chinchilla owning people would consider reading and replying on, I have no problems letting you know exactly where it was printed, multiple times, or even scanning the pages directly. If I am putting up something untrue that they cant spread disease to chins or the other way around, then I am sorry, because my intent is not to mislead anyone. I keep them away from each other not just because concernes about transfering bacterias, or other things, also cos I just dont like the possibility of one or both getting out and being in the same room. It's never happened, but its a personal choice of mine so I dont need to worry about it happening..
oh I forgot to put this.. those rats are too cute. The one in the back looks like mine with his spot on the head. I love the dumbo ones they always keep a babyface. I think stigma about them being bad pets for kids should go away too.. I think they are a safer and better pet as far as interactibility and social ability than hamsters or mice definetly. Some that I used tohave knew their names, knew what go in the cage and time to come out meant, among other things. They are very very intelligent, more than most give them credit for...
