Im not trying to hate on rats i love them even though I dont breed them. But if someone interested wants me to site them the MCBA newsletter/magazine year/month and page where it contains the information that I took that out from I can. I have always considered it a credible and reliable source for where I get information.

The prophoryn, yes I know I spell it wrong a lot, I was told by two vets that it indicates stress when it becomes visable and is a precursor to respatory illiness and other stuff. They said the more stressed out a rat gets or scared from trauma, the more they make. I assumed it to be true because on my rats ( when I was doing this I had a lot of them) when they would get sick, as it happens sometimes, they would always increase their production of this by a LOT.

I have also read in other places that rats you buy at the store and rats in the wild, which I have NEVER encountered, I am just saying what I have READ , that they are able to transmit diseases to chinchillas, when I have read chinchilla information regarding other animals. Again, if anyone is interested in the most credible source most chinchilla owning people would consider reading and replying on, I have no problems letting you know exactly where it was printed, multiple times, or even scanning the pages directly. If I am putting up something untrue that they cant spread disease to chins or the other way around, then I am sorry, because my intent is not to mislead anyone. I keep them away from each other not just because concernes about transfering bacterias, or other things, also cos I just dont like the possibility of one or both getting out and being in the same room. It's never happened, but its a personal choice of mine so I dont need to worry about it happening..

oh I forgot to put this.. those rats are too cute. The one in the back looks like mine with his spot on the head. I love the dumbo ones they always keep a babyface. I think stigma about them being bad pets for kids should go away too.. I think they are a safer and better pet as far as interactibility and social ability than hamsters or mice definetly. Some that I used tohave knew their names, knew what go in the cage and time to come out meant, among other things. They are very very intelligent, more than most give them credit for...

kml.krk ...your new babies are absolutely STUNNING!! :heart3:

thanks to both of you for very kind words.

I love those little buggers :) they're very curious, and they're quite well tamed already. they are not afraid to hop on my or my wife's hands which is great. They love to play and be outside of cage exploring new surroundings.
they love to sit or sleep in our pockets and travel underneath our fleece jackets which is very funny. They barely poop on us which is nice of them too
We will have lots of fun with them.

thank you again for all your support

ALS-Wis-- can you give me the volume # /date/year of the MCBA newsletter? I'll dig through mine and see if I can pull it up. I know nothing when it comes to rats, but can show it to peggy and/or nancy.

I'm only going to say this one more time:

You cannot quote an article about WILD rats and extrapolate the information to domesticated, PET rats. Doesn't work, never will and I trust a chinchilla-owning vet over a ranch article about vermin control any day of the week.

Your rats are too cute and I'm glad they are getting along so well. They must be a lot of fun. What kinds of cage did you put together for them?

Pet rats do not carry diseases of the unknown. My only issue with them is they urinate on everything but otherwise they make better pets than hamsters do. I would not let the chinchilla and rats play together though that's just a recipe for problems. Good luck with your new pets!

Glad you were able to get 2 so they can have companionship. Also glad you wont be letting your chin & rats intermingle. Give your chinnie lots of toys & personal time with you, a good quality wheel like a chinspin or flying saucer, and s/he will be a happy well adjusted pet :)

By the way - your ratties are adorable. Both are females, yes?
~Barb~

both are females indeed! I would not take male and female. It would be very irresponsible!
By the way: rats do NOT urinate on everything! right now they are young so it happened 3 times in 3 days but 2 outof 3 times they got scared and the third time was probably the same cause my sisters dog scared them.
I think that older they get the less they will pee on us.:wink3:
as for the cage: I build a cage using dried kiln pine and galvanized wire mesh with spaces of less than half of an inch. it is 24" long X 12" deep " 29" tall.

Male rats will "mark" their human with urine drips but they will scurry back to their cage to urinate. They are, by nature, very tidy animals.

Yeah it makes a lot of sense. That was just my experience with the pet rats in my sister's 4th grade class she volunteered to take them over one of the week vacations and every time we took them out to play they peed as they walked. Then again they were two males maybe females don't do this as much.

kml.krk Awwww, your new girls are adorable. In the tank photo it looks like you are using pine as a litter. Pine and cedar are not recommended bedding/litter for small animals as they contain phenols which are proven to raise liver enzymes and irritate their delicate respiratory systems. We use either shredded aspen or recycled paper products (e.g Carefresh, Back 2 Nature, Yesterday's News).

I notice also that you used kiln dried pine for the cage. If so, did you seal it with a child safe product? If the wood isn't sealed well, it will absorb urine and stink to high heaven. No amount of cleaning will get rid of the smell.

Your little ratties are ADORABLE! I actually have a male that looks identical to your black one. I have yet to see a problem with them being in the same room as my chins. Actually their cage is on top of my chinchilla cage.(with a metal pan between so shavings and poo don't mix, that would be gross!) I always get so excited when I know people enjoy rats as much as I do. I have had rats for 6 years now and have never found anything like them.

i think thats not a good idea..they might fight and this will coz death for both of them..i suggest you to seperate them cages!!
