Can't believe I've got another cage happening so soon. Blame Serena this time, lol.

Picked up two boys last weekend who absolutely had to go b/c they were selling the house and the owners and Realtor were constantly complaining about them being there.

They came with one of those four level Super Pet (I think) cage and it still had all the plastic shelves and ramps and they had totally chewed a huge hole through one of the shelves. When we were trying to put the cage in the back of the van the cage kinda snapped in half, which was good b/c otherwise it was going to be tough to get it in b/c we also had a 32" TV in there as well.

It was dark when we got home so I left everything in the van until the morning and put the boys in a temp cage until we could put their old cage back together, clean it and make some new shelves.

Here's the cage now with the new shelves and it's much sturdier than it was. We ran out of wood so decided for the time being to keep the top plastic shelf where their original hidey house was. I've got cardboard over the plastic as well as a fleece blanket and they love being in there. The middle wooden thing is a tunnel that also came with them but we moved it to the centre of the cage. I've added some more perches and some lava landings which they really like. They seem so much happier in their new/old cage and are settling in very nicely.

That is a big ol' cage. With all the new wood thngs to chew on, no wonder they are happier. How heavy is it? I noticed my large cages that have to be taken off the base are REALLY heavy once the shelves and ledges are in there. That's one of the reasons I switched to fleece liners. Now I just take out the liner, use a tiny broom and dust pan to get out all the hay and poop that fell under, and then just wipe the pan. I can't imagine having to lift the entire cage off everytime for shavings.

^^ There actually is a pullout pan on that cage but it's really shallow so we took the blue grates off and just filled it with shavings. It doesn't pull out anymore but the lower door is plenty big enough to just shovel up the shavings, vacuum and then clean. The cage is much heavier with all that wood in there and I don't lift it, just open up the bottom door and scoop everything out. Not an ideal situation but it's the cage they came with and they seem to be attached to it so all is okay. I MUCH prefer the custom made cage I ordered from Grandview Commercial Rabbitry for Carlos b/c it has a nice deep pull out pan and SO easy to clean. However, this cage was free and it is functional and quite big actually.

The branches are mostly from apple trees but there's some small willow and aspen trunks, too. The bridge is made of birch, the shelf and the house of sanded pine.

Thanks for comments! It's originally a parrot cage as kimbt622 suspected, and very suitable for chins with only minor changes. I spotted it in a web auction some years ago. The brand is Montana Cage, they sell them worldwide, I think. )

Re-vamped FN

Here's some pictures of my revamped FN. I still have more toys and a bridge on order, but they seem quite happy with the results. Thinking of getting another tube, there has been an epic battle over it! One chin will hop in then another will come from behind and boot them out!

Excuse the mess, repairing their hay box and cleaning the litter pan!

I have the same cage. Only mine is green on the bottom and I only have 2 sections, not 3. I think it may be a bit smaller (lengthwise). Right now, I have fleece on the bottom of the cage covering the crate bottom but I'm debating on taking it out. I've noticed my chin is starting to eat the fleece! It has the same pullout drawer as yours does, but I only have 1 chin in there right now so he doesn't poop enough to overflow the drawer! Do you think his feet are safe on the bottom if I take the fleece out? The holes don't seem to be that big and my chin is a little chunker (1 year old). He really only sleeps down there at night but the rest of the time he's up in his hammock. It would also be easier to clean as well. :thumbsup:

Im just starting my cage and i cant figure out anything to do with it... Right now its just a super pets cage with the ramps taken out... I really wanna make it look amazing with all the little ledges like all of yours but i just cant imagine how to do it (if that makes any sense at all)

Everyone's cages are awesome! A lot of these inspired me with my own cage.

We just got rid of all the wire shelves and ramps (except the very bottom) and we built our own shelves for the cage.

I'm also plan on adding a bridge, hay box, and fleece tube, and another hammock eventually as well.

I have recently (finally) removed the ramps in Tinkerbell's cage and she seems very happy with the new layout. She also has 2 playpens attached to her cage to come in and out of her cage as she pleases.

Jenn- does she ever try to jump out of the play pen? I have a play pen and mine always tries to climb to the highest point and jump out. Before Maisie passed away, she jumped out of the playpen and actually ended up on kitchen counter. Your playpen looks exactly like mine that's why i'm asking.

Maybe Tinkerbell doesn't have any need to ever get out?

I've had chins end up on counter tops. The trick is to not ever let them realize that they CAN jump that high. Once they know, they keep doing it.

I'm lucky I guess, because I have had the playpen up for over a year and Tink has never tried to jump out. I know other chins can easily jump over a playpen, but Tink seems to be a lazy jumper. If she ever does decide to attempt an escape, my plan is to use large sheets of cardboard attached to the pen to increase its height. But like Susan ( AZChins) suggested, I try to keep it a secret from her that she can actually jump over the pen!

I just had a few questions about all the cages. I currently have two chins and theyre in a cage that's about 2.5 ft wide and about 3.5 ft tall. They've got 2 full wood ledges, a hammock, and a flying saucer wheel. Is this big enough for two?

I really want to get a ferret nation cage sometime soon. But based on the pictures most people seem to have fleece liners. What's the point of this? I know its hard on their feet to walk on wire bottoms, but dont they pee on it?? Mine usually just go in one or two corners, but without pine shavings, I'd think their cage would get really messy. Also, how do you make the little tubes lined with fleece?
