I've spoiled my chins with broccoli as a treat for three years, and never had any issues that I know of; and they love it.

When I was with my former fiancee, we also fed broccoli to the degus, which are very sensitive to anything containing sugar. It was from that knowledge that we started feeding the chins that as well, since it is rich in vitamins & minerals.

Just double-checking, does anyone see anything wrong with this healthy vegetable?

This person asks about fruits but many people who replied answered said no to both fruits and vegetables for the same reason .. too much sugar! I'm not sure, and hopefully somebody who knows more can say for sure, but I think even though your chins might be okay now, they can develop diabetes and stuff like that from too much sugar. I don't give my chin anything like that, just in case :D Good luck!

IMO that has to be the worst thing you could ever feed a chin, people get gas from it and why woud you not think chins would? Ever deal with bloat? Do you know what bloat is and why its deadly? No fruit, donuts, veggies, pizza etc.

I'm pretty sure broccoli and other cruciferous veggies are not recommended even for cavies and rabbits due to the gas they produce after ingested.

YES! No fruits or vegetables of any kind for chins. You are very lucky you have not had any issues thus far with your chin. Healthy treats for chins are small plain shredded wheat, dried rose hips, plain cheerios, a tiny amount of old fashioned cooking oats (not the instant kind) small piece of pasta. Hay daily and chin approved wood pieces to chew on daily as well.

when i was younger, i once ate an entire party tray of broccoli...lets just say that i stayed up all night, crying, nauseated and gassy, saying "im going to dieeeee". IMO, 1 piece of broccoli to them would be like the day i consumed the entire party tray. our human bodies are meant to consume this "healthy vegetable", but chinchilla bodies cannot. chins tend to hide illness and discomfort well, so perhaps you may not have noticed that they didn't feel all that great.

when it comes to chins: pellets, hay, water.
safe treats: oats, shreddies, rosehips, a cheerio....in moderation (2x a week at most). feeding treats/table scraps to any animal has the potential to shorten that animal's life. if you want to give a treat, stick to something safe.

You would be correct in that..although not strictly forbidden, it can cause gas in cavies and is not recommended.

to the OP..knowing how gassy it makes humans when they eat it, I would steer clear of it and count your blessings that you have not had any serious problems with bloat and all that can go wrong with it. There are a lot of us, on here, who have had to deal with bloat issues and even some have had chins never recover and die from it. Just because you have not had any problems with bloat as of yet, does not mean it will never happen.
I would take all the advice and listen to those who have dealt with sever gas issues and stop the broccoli and stick with some of the recommended chin safe treats.

i agree.......the vet even told me that even my guinea pig should only have small amounts of broccoli occassionaly because of the high gas content.
