I don't know why people would be letting a male and female in a cage together unless they were breeding. I see where people have a male and female in the same cage all the time... then they are suprised to find kits... UH COMMON SENSE PEOPLE! It's ridiculous... I get sick everytime I see the adds on craigslist or see chins in the pet store. I don't understand why people would do that to a chin... Like the petstore here in Warsaw, IN has a chin for 108. And they feed him that Kaytee crap food, have him in a enclosed case, and have him in with a plastic igloo. I tried to tell the manager there that it was not the way to have him, but still, have not moved him. Poor chinnie! Too bad I can't go get him out of there...

I really believe people are dumb enough to be suprised sometimes. They really are! This lady that my mother works with had kittens up for adoption a couple of months back. So,my mother being an animal lover as well, commented to her "Don't you think there's enough unwanted kittens out there? If you knew that you had a male and female cat living together you had to have known that you were going to contribute to more unwanted animals!" She replied (and she was serious) "Well my two female cats are always laying together and licking each other so I thought that they were lesbians! I thought that neither of them would have sex with the male." Come on! No, she wasn't being sarcastic and wasn't even joking. My mother even said "You're kidding right?" And no she was not and was angry because my mother laughed at her and told her that was the dumbest thing she had ever heard someone say. Some people really are stupid and really are suprised when they find that they have babies one day.

Kinda like the ones who think "They are brother and sister. They love each other. Of course they won't mate."

Hmmmmmmmm

Wow! People think that? I mean honestly! Do people live under rocks? Animals' instinct are to mate... Hmmm... That blows me away!!!!! People being suprised that male and female, brother and sister, etc would mate... WOW!

I heard from several people that the only way to breed chins was to get a brother and sister or they would fight. Or, that this was the only way to have two chins living in the same cage. They are always surprised to hear that a father WILL mate with a daughter, or a mother with a son, etc. Chins are smart, they have so few natural instincts left - BUT, the urge to mate is an instinct that they do not hesitate to follow! A female is in heat and a male wants to make babies...that's it...

An experienced chin breeder and rescuer once posted that on CnQ. That if the boy and girl grew up together, they would think of each other as siblings and would never mate because the urge wouldn't be there.

Needless to say, it drew considerable fire from people who had more sense than she did.

I remember that Idiot...there was a male who said the same thing and for some odd reason his females many died before they were old enough for breeding when they were in a weaning cage of mixed sex....gee I wonder why....... I know the male breeder got out chins all togther..is the other around still???

Kristy.. obviously I'm still right here... :p

Just don't yell at me later. I just said "someone." I never gave your actual name, did I?

I've known a couple that did that and none are still breeding. It takes awhile but they seem to go down in flames with a bunch of dramatic hooplah at one point or another.

Come to think of it, of the original local people I knew when I started (~1999) only Ronda, sue and the Lindas are around. That's three states worth of breeders. Everyone else has gone by the wayside.

That is the trend, the bad breeders come and go......usually quickly. Sadly though this year we have lost a few great breeders to the economy
