    I created oatmeal junkies

Might want to find another treat to supplement. Too much oatmeal (like any treat) can upset the digestive system, not to mention they'll fill up on treats instead of pellets and hay given the chance! Silly chins. While oatmeal is a lot better than raisins or dried fruit, I like to mix it up and...

Trouble with our new water bottle?? Placement in cage?

I have that water bottle attached from the outside to a FN cage and have never had a problem with it. I find when I refill it I need to make sure that the rubber sealing ring is pushed down properly on the spout side (not sure if that makes sense...a rubber sealing ring sits inside the spout...

    Mounting

They should be separated immediately. Unfortunately chins, even brothers, can turn on each other. If one chin is going after the other and they are fighting then they need to be separated immediately before you wake up to a dead chin. While humping for dominance (and fun time) is normal and ok...

    Biting

What are you doing that results in the chins biting you? It generally takes quite a bit for a chin to settle into their new environment and feel safe. If you they are feeling scared or threatened and 'barking' at you, chances are they aren't ready to be handled. Go slow, go at their pace not...

What should I do with the shelf in the FN? What is yours?

When I first had my cage I covered them in fleece. I have a double FN and I'm now down to only one half shelf, fleece covered, and then just lots of pine ledges and the like. I personally like having one half ledge (in a double FN) because I can hang a hammock from the metal on the bottom and I...

    Hair falls out

I agree that it looks like ringworm. You might also find Tinactin (another common anti-fungal medication) and blu-kote can be used as well. There are lots of threads on how to use it on the forum, so just use the search function :) Also, from the pics it looks like the food you are feeding your...

    Bedding and food

I currently feed Alderpark Pellets (from Vancouver Island), though in the past I have fed Mazuri and Oxbow. I currently use fleece for bedding, but in the past have used kiln dried pine shavings.

    Bedding

Safe bedding: Aspen shavings, KD pine shavings, & fleece. Paper based and other beddings are too likely to be problematic and not worth the risk, plus buying shavings at a feed store is generally the most cost effective way to go.

New to Chins, need housing and wheel advice?

One thing about this cage is you need to also order a pan for the bottom of the cage because the spacing of the wires is dangerous for a chinchillas feet (inappropriate spacing can lead to broken legs resulting in amputation). You would also want to remove the ramps (chinchillas are jumpers...

    cage question

I have the Ferret Nation and I love it. I'm not worried about escapes because I've never had baby chins (which are the only ones capable of squeezing through those bars!). I've read that others have experienced bars breaking on the CN over time, but not having one I can't say how frequently that...

    So Scared

The only thing anyone on here can tell you is that your chin needs to see a vet experienced in chinchillas ASAP. Has he been eating? Pooping? Drinking?

    Wall-chewing chinchilla?

Your chin should only be allowed out to play and roam in thoroughly chin proofed areas because they will chew on everything! Lining things with cardboard works well and you also need to ensure that there is nothing a chin can bite (like wires or other unsafe household things, particularly...

    Ignoring chin

Not at least checking in on your chin on a daily basis can be risky for its healthy because you will be much less likely to notice if your chin is acting out of the ordinary or giving you subtle clues that all might not be well. Because chins can go downhill very quickly I think it is important...

    chin ate piece of thread

Keep doing what you're doing. If food intake, poops, drinking, etc. changes then head to the vet. If not, then it will likely have passed.

    Loud noises at bedtime. Help!

The FN cage covers are made of non-chin safe material, so if you are getting a cover of any kind, make sure that it is made of fleece and that one side of the cage is always uncovered for ventilation. Also make sure that they are in a temp controlled room so that they don't overheat with the...
