    Oat Kernel, is it safe?

If you mean oat groats (what the oats are before they are rolled or cut), then yes, they are safe. I hand feed them to Idgie as a treat, but only a pinch a day. I buy them at Whole Foods.

New Lixit Valve Water Bottles at PetSmart!

I ended up buying one as a back-up. It is a little rounder than the Edstrom and the nozzle has a bit of a slant downward (the Edstrom is parallel to the ground). It does fit the metal guard. Not sure if the slant will cause any leaks. And they are a little pricey, but I'd never go back to...

Idgie eats Mazuri and doesn't have any problems with it. She seems to like it. Good luck.

    Reason for Barking?

Both of my chins squeeked loudly while sleeping. I think that it is the warning cry and they seem to be just fine when checking on them. I wouldn't worry about it. I also had a chin that barked, but this was a shorter, deeper pitch sound. It was more aggressive like a go away sound. We had a...

New Lixit Valve Water Bottles at PetSmart!

I have the Edstrom water buddy for Idgie that I love. She got the hang of it right away. Doesn't drip. I did buy a metal guard for it because even though they hang outside the cage, a chin can somehow manage to get a few bites in. Don't know if this bottle will fit the guard that I have...

    Overheating?

I'm in the Chicago area where the temps have been all over the place (which really isn't that odd here for May). I don't go by the date on deciding when to turn the air on. If it is over 70 degrees in the house in the morning and it is going to be in the 80's outside, I know that I need to...

    Old over new?

I'm not sure if one is better than another. My first chin was young and given to me as a gift. She wasn't socialized b/c she had been living in a pet store for many months. I don't know if it was her personality or her lack of attention when she was young, but she wasn't terribly friendly...

    Wood

Might be easier to just use poplar. Looks better than pine and no confusion.

    Wood Ledges/Wood Chews

Not sure if your store sells poplar, but it is about the same price as pine and gives a little variety. Idgie loves it.

    Tiles on bottom of cage????

I'm surprised that they wouldn't try to eat the grout. Good for you. I remodel and tile for a living and see many houses with grout breaking out from between the tiles. I suppose that without a lot of movement on them, they wouldn't do that much in a chin cage. And maybe the unsanded isn't...

    Tiles on bottom of cage????

I wouldn't grout between them. Chins would just chew the grout out, especially since it is like dust. Instead of tile, I was able to put a sheet of lucite over the wire bottom of Idgie's cage. It isn't easy to cut, but very light and one piece. Either way, I find it much easier to clean a...

    Broccoli

I don't give Idgie any fresh veggies. And I agree that broccoli is definitely not a good idea.

    Bald spot?

Idgie has the exact same little line of bald spot on her tail. Hers isn't quite as long (only about 1/2 inch) and hasn't gotten longer. But the fur isn't growing back either. It is never red--just a little white line. I just keep an eye on it, but I have no clue how it happened either.

    hay

I get a bale of "grass" hay from a farmer. I guess that means orchard grass. There is some alfalfa in there, so I guess that she gets a couple different kinds.

    Kiln dried maple

I'm not sure, but I generally think of maples as not being safe. I use the following link www.chinchillas2home.co.uk/safewoods.htm

Is He Obsessed Over His Cuddle Buddy?

I got one for Idgie a few years ago and she completely ignores it. I find that she sometimes sits on it while she is eating--because that is where it is in the cage. I ended up getting her a couple smaller fleece little pillows, but she just throws those out of her house or shoves them in the...

    How to fix my mistakes?

Good for you to learn and be willing to change things. I had a chin many years ago that I cared for very differently than I do with my current chin, Idgie. And it is because of what I learned from this group. Just keep reading, searching, and asking questions.

    Travel with chin?

I don't think that it would be fair to her to put her through all that stress. You'll miss her and she will miss you, but as everyone said, a month is not a long time in the big scheme of things. Do what is best for her!

    New Chinchilla

I find that Idgie sleeps on her house or outside of it when she is in her cage at someone else's house (when I go on vacation). At home, she largely sleeps inside. I think that she is kind of "on-guard" and doesn't want to miss anything. Maybe that is what your chin is doing since she is new...
