    barking

Sometimes they just bark. Who knows what they hear or think. A couple nights ago Aika would not stop. She barked for like 3 hours at around 5 am. When I got up and checked her later her food and water had gone down the usual amount and she was perched happily in her usual spot.

    Craigslist

Actually a lot of breeders of many animals make a similar contract to prevent unwanted breeding and homeless animals. That ones wording is a little strong but I consider a contract of no breeding or the animals are reclaimed to be the sign of a responsible breeder. Only the animals they deem...

    Two chinchillas together

The young ones I've been introducing often do that. It seems to be them begging the other chin to be their friend. The really little ones also squeak a bunch while doing it as if they are telling the bigger chin they are just little babies who want to be friends and please don't start a fight.

    Versele-Laga Brand

Of course he'll eat the one with dried bits and junk. It's like giving a kid candy. Chinchillas really shouldn't have any fruit. Drying fruit simply concentrates the sugar not make it healthier. Most of the other stuff in those mixes they should never have either. Without an ingredients...

    SpiderChin!

Aika can run on the ceiling of her cage. Don't ask me how she does it. Lots of centrifugal force is my best guess. She treats her cage like a big wheel and just runs right up one side, upside down across the top panel, and down the other side. Then she turns around and does it the other way...

    Why is spruce unsafe?

And just because cedar is unsafe doesn't mean all conifers are.

    Is a 4x3 c and c cage too small?

USDA requires 2 sq ft but you can't fit all the suggested supplies in that size cage. Generally on forums 4 sq ft minimum is suggested. That's just enough for a wheel at one end, food and water bowls at the other end, and a hedgie bag or blanket in the middle.

    Rosehips

Ours get 1 rosehip in the morning, dried herb and flower supplement at night 3 times a week, and occasional other treats like individual dried herbs and flowers (have dandelion right now), oatmeal, or sugar free cereal the other nights. Wood, hay, and pellets are unlimited as they finish them...

    Why is spruce unsafe?

Probably one of the more paranoid groups who are against the use of any softwoods since they all contain some level of phenols. Spruce shouldn't be any worse and I've found it better than pine.

    Why is spruce unsafe?

Usually you can't find kiln dried spruce only shavings. We did used to get in "softwood shavings" that were a mix of spruce and pine and they had less smell, dried better, and caused no more issues than plain pine. I tried to ask for them every time we needed more shavings for the guinea pigs...

Where can you get fleece by the yard the cheapest?

For $1 more you can go to joanns for higher quality fleece than walmart also cut off the bolt by the yard. Most cages don't take more than a yard.

What supplies do hedgehogs have to have (besides tons if toys)?

Solid bottom cage of at least 4sq ft fleece liner for cage possibly some items to weigh down fleece liner if you have a liner diver bucket or saucer wheel with solid running surface proper cat food (less than 15% fat, between 30-35% protein) There's a list around of acceptable cat foods if you...

Where to buy large pieces of chin safe pine

Any plain wood board is safe. What you don't want is the greenish stuff that is treated lumber for outdoor use.

    Chinchilla won't stop biting cage

Rodents have broken teeth bar chewing. If she's just doing it a little or when you are nearby then ignoring it is the best option but if it becomes excessive you can weave thin twigs or palm shredders sold for bird toys through the area they chew the most. Then they might chew on those items...

    Low body temperature?

Low temp is harder to diagnose than high temp. A high temp is generally an infection and they can easily find the cause and a proper treatment but a low temp can be anything. That's probably why they didn't give a complete diagnosis. It could be an infection so serious it's gone septic...

You Know You're A Chinchilla Owner When...

That is why all dusting is done in the bathroom. Then we sweep up the inch thick layer that covers everything. Just don't look behind the toilet. Last time I went on vacation was 4 years ago and I spent 5 hours typing instructions for each cage/animal, taping it to the cage and labeling every...

    I need to stop...

Brown velvet isn't too hard to get. Beige seems pretty common. At least here. They can't really be carriers of brown velvets though. You need a velvet and a beige. You are either crossing a tov and a beige or you already have a brown velvet. Neither gene is a full recessive that can be...

    I need to stop...

I've emailed a few people on CL and told them the petstore took them for a ride and the $100s of supplies they have are not suitable for long term use. Also people who want $300 for a standard because that's what the petstore or someone else charged. I'm not mean about it but most don't listen...

    Aggressive Chin?

My husband's response was "I hope you have very fast reflexes". If you keep pulling apart and putting together animals that don't really get along the situation actually escalates instead of improving. They do not solve who is dominant so the dominant one tries harder the next time...

    Chinchilla Rescue

Sometimes life does just throw you a curve ball and you have to rehome or put down an animal you planned to care for it's entire life. Sometimes you also just end up with something you can't care for it's entire life but giving it a temp home and finding it a new home is better than it's...
