    So Excited!

So cute :D Glad to hear that she is coming around! One of my boys pulled a wire through his cage(how he even got to it is beyond me), chewed it up and got zapped. He had minor electrical burns on his mouth so the vet prescribed me some cream. As soon as he saw the tube he freaked out. He's...

    To neuter/spay or not?

You shouldn't spay/neuter just to pair chins together. Surgery always comes with a risk but it's more risky for small animals. Even if they enjoy each other's company, they will be fine on their own. A neuter is less invasive but you can still have many complications. It's just not worth the...

    Which food should I get??

I feed Manna Pro Sho. It's available in 50lb bags at my local Tractor Supply Company. While it's too much for my chins to finish before it goes bad, yours may be able to go through most of it. My chin liked Oxbow. My second chin came to me on Manna Pro Sho so I just switched to that.

What hay do you feed your chins?

I always give them timothy but I'll add an additional handful of something else(oat, meadow, alfalfa, botanical, etc...). The alfalfa is rarely give though.

    Favorite Sleeping Place

^Mine doesn't like sleeping in anything 'loose' either. That one also won't sleep in houses. The only place he comfortably sleeps is his tube. My other one prefers the tube but he will sleep everywhere.

    Teeth Issues

I'm not that knowledgeable about this since I've never dealt with it, but I imagine the teeth need filed down. They are causing pain which is resulting in him not eating. No matter what you give, the teeth will just continue to cause irritation unless they're filed down. Again... I'm no expert...

    Petting chins

It's recommended that chins under 6 months old not be given any treats. As far as petting goes... Are you reaching over their heads? Try using a finger to scratch their chin. Most absolutely love that and you won't be reaching over them to do it.

Forced picking up vs waiting it out

My second chin was super friendly as soon as I got him home. Within the first week of having him, he was jumping in to my hands and forcing me to hold him Lol. I just went with the flow and started picking him up. Now we have this game of 'hot potato'. He jumps in my hand and I put him back...

pros and cons of owning a chin

Best parts: -There is never a dull moment -Full of personality/funny little creatures -Gives you something to be responsible for/take care of -Can become very bonded with their owners -Easy to care for -Long life expectancy -Caged, so good for apartments that don't allow cats/dogs(though some...

    How to reduce urine smell?

If they pee on the fleece, it starts to smell rather quickly. All you can do to stop that is to change it more often. Using shavings would definitely cut down on the smell. Both of mine are litter trained so it's not that big of an issue for me.

Chinchilla one ear down loud shreak

One of mine does that all the time. Scared the crap out of me the first time I heard it. XD

    Heater?

That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure before I went out and got one. :]

    Heater?

I don't know if the heater being that close is a problem though, that's why I'm asking. I'm not sure how that would stop the heat? A board is only like 6" wide so I'd need a bunch. Plus I'm a bit weary of wood touching the heater like that. Would it be better to get a small electric heater...

    Heater?

Alright, so my heater hasn't been used since I got my chins. It gets rather cold in my bedroom and while I can manage, I wanted some input in case I can ease my suffering Lol. My chins are both in separate double CNs, one being right next the heater. Now my bedroom is always a safe temperature...

    First time owner - questions

Wire bottoms are okay as long as you have other things for them to stand on. Personally, I would put some fleece down or make sure there is a nice amount of bedding there. If her feet look irritated, I would definitely do something about it. All plastic should be covered with fleece or...

    What Directed Us?

My brother gave me my first chin because it wasn't working out with him. It was a surprise and I was in no way ready for it, but with some research I made it through okay. Then I went out and got a second one from a breeder. :]

    Critter nation or Ferret nation

^They're correct. Paper bedding will expand when wet, which can cause a blockage. If using a paper based bedding, you must make sure that they're not eating it.

    Critter nation or Ferret nation

The bass pans are ordered online... I don't think you can buy them at Home Depot. http://www.bassequipment.com/Cage+Pans/Ferret+Nation+Pans/default.aspx I would just cover the pans with fleece until you can get them.

    Critter nation or Ferret nation

I personally chose the CN since I knew my cat would be shoving his paws through the FN bars. Since he cannot do that, he leaves them alone. I use fleece for my cages, but I know some people do buy Bass pans to replace the plastic ones. I believe those are about $20-30 per pan, I could be wrong...

What does a new owner need?

http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20384&highlight=supplies+list There is the grand master supply list. It has links to various places that you can purchase supplies. Hay Racks Make sure you don't use any of the metal hay racks/balls found in pet stores. Chinnies can break...
