Getting rid of CRICKETS! (Without harming Chinchillas)

It's that time of year again, the Crickets are here! My room is in the basement, where my chinchillas are. I also normally get some spiders, but I don't worry too much about them. Yea I don't like the idea of them crawling around in my room or on me, but they are known to eat other bugs. Does...

    Ticks!!!

I've always heard that chinchillas can't get ticks or fleas because their fur is too dense for them to stick to. I'm sure someone who knows more about this will chime in, thats just what I was told in the past.

    Ceramic tiles?

My chinchillas just figured out how to pull up the fleece and climb under it... so I need a chiller to place in the corner they do it in. What should I use? A granite tile?

    PVC tube question

I used to have one with a chube, never had any problems. I had it for about a year. Are you covering it in fleece? If so, you can just re-drill and the old holes are hidden!

I almost lost one of my hamster today

I don't know all the details, I just know he was put on oxygen. I know this because it was part of the $400-$600 bill (I don't remember, this was about a year ago). I've heard of much higher bills for chinchillas and such.. but still that's is a big chunk of change. Oh and I left out the sad...

    PVC tube question

I haven't seen a 6" PVC Pipe that wasn't like 8 feet long. If you can't find any short enough, you could always just use one of the large "Chubes" from a pet store. They are like 6" X 10".

I almost lost one of my hamster today

So sorry that happened... Once my dog jumped off the boat in the lake.. my dad scooped him up and brought him back on. The dog wasn't moving. My dad then did CPR on the dog and revived him.. We had to take him to the vet that night because he wasn't acting right. Turns out there was water in...

New Owner. Questions. Where to get supplies?

This was a little older post. I found everything from AZChins. Thanks for the suggestions! -Ben

    PVC tube question

Yea, I used something like this. http://image.made-in-china.com/2f0j00yeBEvNiCwOqg/Asme-B18-5-2-Metric-Round-Head-Short-Square-Neck-Carriage-Bolts-CH-bolt-011-.jpg Once I had the hole drilled, I held the drill at an angel in the hole, to make the inside of the hole a little bit larger. So the...

    Rice pops?

I was wondering where that nut came from! One of those came with my cage off CL. Found that in there one night after they tore apart that toy. Guess it's a good thing they weren't interested in that nut.

First cut vs. second or third cut hay?

Interesting information about hay.. I never knew all of that. I've always heard that second cut timothy was the best. Would that be correct?

    Playtime Ideas

A dust bath, cardboard fort, and people to jump on usually made them pretty happy to be out for play time.

    Tap, or bottled water?

I just switched to Reverse Osmosis. A gallon jug probably lasts about a month for my two chins, and costs like $1.20 at Walmart.

    Hey there!

I'm sure one of the breeders I told you about would let you come and check them out. You could ask to give them hay and have one of them dust bath to see if you react at all. Just an idea?

    Chinchilla Stickers

If you can't find one you like, there are sites out there that let you make your own custom stickers. You can upload a picture that you find online (or one you took yourself), and they will mail them to you. A couple sites are zazzle or cafepress, just google Custom Stickers.

    Fleece liners...question

I would be sure to wash it once (or twice) before you do any cutting. Fleece is known to shrink a little. I also don't ever dry it in the dryer. Sometimes I put it in the dryer on delicate to speed things up, but then it gets hung up to dry. From experience, no pre wash + drying on high =...

    Chinchilla Bonding

Those sound like good signs to me! I have two new chins, and they are totally different. One has been friendly since day one, but the other is very shy and runs whenever I open the cage. After a couple weeks, the friendly one will actually jump on my lap now. The other one is making some...

    Zippers on fleece liner

I have a 141 and have the plastic pan wrapped in fleece in a pillow case style. The open end is a little bit longer so it can tuck under the pan. That way they don't pull it up. Is that what yours is like? Mine is 2 pieces of fleece and a towel. It looks like a pillow case, but the towel is...

    Making a liner

I've always used a old towel in between two pieces of fleece. Fleece/Towel/Fleece and sew them together. If you don't have an old one that you want to use, Walmart has them for like $3-4. I have two chins, and no litter pan. It gets changed about every 3 days or when it starts to smell.

How do you clean the cage if it has a super large door, like a FN142?

Normally mine jump to the top shelves when I vacuum, so theres not a problem. If just opening one door at a time isn't working, you could try putting them in a carrier? That is what I did in the past when the cage needed some scrubbing. I like what you did with the fleece pee guards. I was...
