Just had a kit! Mom and baby are doing fine, we are all just in shock right now though. I don't want to stir anything up, but I want those of you that got Arlington Chins to be aware and know what is going on. Just incase this happens to anyone else too. I have not introduced Pepper (the Arlington Chin) to Chili yet and she has been alone since we got her. You can do the math and know that she was preggo before. We have been letting her adjust so we don't handle her much, plus she was alittle skiddish so we were letting her adjust. This morning I came in the living room and she was acting weird, I knew right away that she was having contractions. Everything went fine, but I've never dealt with kits before! I have removed all of the ledges and the wheel now. I don't have any hardware cloth handy so I weaved some fleece through the wires until I can get to the store! Plus I need to go to Walmart and get a gram scale. Geesh, I'm in shock still!!

I'd be willing to bet a few more may have that happen as well. It appears that the "knowledgable" rescuers weren't very accurate with their sexing.

Just make sure your cage is secure. Give mom a little bit of alfalfa hay if you have it (it's my understanding these are all very young chins) and keep an eye on her weight and her teeth. If her teeth start to turn white, you will need to up her calcium. I've seen that happen with chins that were too young to be bred. Treat her like you normally would as far as her feed and so on. If she doesn't have one (and I'm sure she does, since this is a pet home) she'll feel more secure with a house for the two of them to hide in. Gauge how you handle the kit to mom's behavior. If she gets totally spazzed if you try and hold the kit, then just let them be for a while. At some point though, you'll need to just let mom grin and bear it so you can weigh the kit and handle her so she/he gets used to humans.

Congratulations?? :)

Thanks! I will post some pics in a bit, she is cute. I was able to get her out long enough to get a few pics and know that she is a she. The only thing that worries me is now that I've taken the ledges out Pepper is jumping around. I put her house in but she gets on the top of it and it worries me that in her jumping around she will hurt the baby! I took it out for the time being, should I put it back in?

Was she jumping around when the house wasn't in? If she wasn't, then leave the house out for now, or I will sometimes tip the house over so mom and the kit can still go in it. All of my cages have houses, with and without babies, and the only time I've had kits stomped is when the dad tried to breed back.

You can also throw a glass jelly or pickle jar in there if you think mom is getting too rambunctious. I use them and the kits run inside and hide if the folks get to running around a bit too much.

Thanks Tunes! Here are a few pics. Please excuse the poos, you know how they can scatter! LOL

I would remove that wheel for now. As low as it sits to the bottom of the cage, you could be looking at a serious problem if the kit gets underneath. Aside from that, mom is small and young. She needs her calories more than ever with feeding a kit. You can put it back in later when they can both use it and be safe.

ETA: So busy worrying about safety, forgot to mention that she's a cutie.

Glad everything went well. I think congratulations are definitely in order! What a little cutie :)).

Yeah, I took it out. I took it out about an hour after she had her. I just wasn't expecting it so I didn't do anything to prepare. And I wanted her to adjust without being bothered for a bit. But it is all out now, thanks for the tips though

My hubby is going to get some hardware cloth and a scale now. I weaved fleece through the wire on the cages for the time being, it is better than nothing I guess. Thanks for the support everyone! I really appreciate the tips and advice!

I am very, very happy to hear your female was able to birth a kit. I know that doesn't mean that all the females from this raid are in the same boat, but it gives me a bit more hope for mine. I was deathly afraid that they would just be too small to birth safely.

I also ended up with a female, though for over a month I thought it was a male so she continued to be housed with her male partner. Apparently mine was not the only one who was sexed wrong and put with a male.

Beautiful baby! I am so surprised you were able to be there for the birth. That's awesome!

Congrats on the baby! I'm glad she went to someone who had access to the forum in case something happened.

I wonder how many other unsuspecting people will be having kits. Looks like someone made a big mistake in the sexing and pairing department, eh?

I am hoping that this is the ONLY oops. It's good that she got the kit out and the birth went well! Sometimes things don't go that easily...and with young females things can and do go wrong because they're so small.

The kit is gorgeous! I'm so glad that the little fuzzy and mama are doing well. You're sure that she only has one, right? :p Make sure to feel her belly to see if you can feel other kits. The placenta may not have been delivered yet. Depending on relaxed the uterus is you may be able to feel that. (I've mistook the placenta for a kit more times than I care to admit! hehehe That Rhymes!)

Someone make a mistake with sexing about 105 to 120 days ago. :) The mama got pregnant sometime in early to maybe mid December.

Susan,

Sadly essentia has a female that was mis-sexed and may be pregnant... So thats two I know of off the top of my head, so I'm sure theres more to follow.

Then that would probably have been their AWESOME chin specialist that was in charge when the animals were seized

Glad to see that the baby is in good hands!

I know, Megs! :( I am just hoping so hard that Crysta's girl isn't pregnant. And, I really hope no one else is preggers. They're mostly just babies.

Did they seize the animals in December? I can't remember. I have to go look now.

I just checked...YEP! That's RIGHT about the time that they were seized. Ugggg.... Maybe they let them all play together and that's when it happened?

If either of my rescues chins have babies, I'm going to FLIP OUT!!! As far as I know, neither have been with a male but I don't know what may have happened before I got them. I do NOT want babies.

But your baby is very cute. I'm glad everything went well.

They were seized Dec 16th right? Could she have been one of the chins that was already at Global? I know that the dates vary from 103-120 days. So she could have possibly been preggo before the raid right? I know the timing is really close all the way around, no matter how you look at it. But they are both doing good now, and they will have an awesome home for the rest of their lives! Does everyone agree that she looks like a standard? I know that it is hard this early, but I'm pretty sure that's what she is. I just don't see much white on her belly, does that come in later?
