    Thrift Shop Towels?

I did check Walmart but I thought all the less expensive ones were small!! :O I'm really really bad at visualizing areas of things, so that may be it. I'll definitely have another look there, then!

    Thrift Shop Towels?

So I need to make more liners for Pepper's cage. I have all the fleece bought, and normally I would use a towel as an inner absorbent layer, but I don't have any old ones lying around and even at "cheap" stores, towels are still like $10 each! Not horrid, except I need four of them, and their...

chin hates being held and touched

Yeah, my boy hates being picked up and won't really let me touch anywhere that isn't his head. They don't tend to be super cuddly animals, and some hate contact more than others. Sounds like your chin's behaviour is pretty normal.

    Weighing a chin

I use a tall metal bowl and give my boy a treat to keep him occupied, I give him a bit of plain shredded wheat which he LOVES but ONLY gets when he's on the scale. Though I worry because my scale is iffy =.= The last time I'd weighed him he'd either magically gained around 300 grams or lost like...

    Cage

I had to leave the ramp between 'units' (with the fleece cover on) in my CN for a while until I could replace the plastic shelves with wooden ones. I found that if I put the standard shelf at its highest, it was farther than I wanted for him to jump down to the main floor and kinda squished to...

Improving somebody else's chin's living situation?

Aside from what was mentioned above, get him off the treats. Chins can't digest sugar and really shouldn't have raisins at all. If he's getting them really regularly, that's pretty dangerous. If you MUST give him treats (they don't need treats but I know its nice to give them every so often)...

They waste a lot of hay!

My boy does this a lot too :/ I have a fleece hay bag for him but he pulls all the hay out and throws it everywhere no matter how nice and new and sweet smelling it is 9.9 Sometimes he likes the hay cubes more, other times he likes the loose hay more.... chins are fickle, real fickle. I've...

Have to vent about the local pet store.... UGH

I can't stop being upset about this. I have two small pet shops right near me, one that sells just supplies and one that sells supplies and small animals/birds/fish and sometimes adopt out cats for the local shelter. Well today I needed cat food real bad but the smaller supply-only shop was out...

    Favorite color/ Dream color

If I get another chin I'd love to get an extra dark ebony, I love the really nice jet black ones, they're so pretty!!! Really I'm just a sucker for black animals though....!!

    Bottled or tap water?

Most bottled stuff is basically tap water that's been shipped really far. Its a horrid industry that I really can't get behind for any reason. I use what I can for the moment, which is a Brita filter, but when I'm living in my own space I'd like to invest in a better one. I'm also leery of RO...

Any potential problem with switching to all hay cubes and an alternative dust?

The only thing that I find to be irksome with hay cubes (I feed loose hay and cubes since my boy is picky and will sometimes prefer one over the other and frankly anything I can do to get him to eat hay is fabulous) is that if you've got real heavy shedders or your chins are going through a...

    Ferret Nation Liner Help!!

When I made my liners I made them with one colour of fleece and just used a few old towels as a middle absorbent layers *the towels happened to be pretty much exactly the width I needed, add I had to do was cut to length and account for the cutout). For each set of 2 liners for my CN I believe I...

What temperature do you keep your chins rooms/house at?

Hopefully I answered this right! Farenheit confuses me even with a handy Google converter, haha. I try and keep the house at 23 degrees celsius (73 degrees farenheit or so) but because my chinchilla's cage is in the 'basement' (which is actually at ground level, but its the lowest level of the...

    Divided/stacked cages?

If you're looking for bar spacing for kits, a double CN is your best bet. They're usually easy to acquire and can function as one large cage or two separate stacked cages. I believe you can keep two chins on one level. The pans that come with aren't great but are easily replaced with deeper...

Advice for 8 year old chin?

As Tunes said, just keep truckin'. My boy's around eight and he's got no health issues and jumps around and makes messes like a little hurricane, no signs of slowing down. Chins usually live a good long time, so eight isn't THAT old when you consider how long many live. I prefer to think of my...
