Okay, Bessie is in a cage right now that has wire shelves. I usually cover them in fleece, but her new hobby is to rip the fleece off.

The shelves are half inch squares, of quite thick plastic-coated wire... is that small enough that she won't get stuck on them, or should I just remove them?

That should be fine.

I've be worried about the coating if she decides to chew on it. Otherwise as long as she has places to get off and rest and should be okay. If you're feeling frisky and unsure, make her some pine shelves, it's so easy even I can do it! :p

The entire cage is made of the thick plastic-coated wire... she has no interest in it, there aren't even "trying" marks on it. I check it out every few days to make sure she hasn't changed her mind...

I am gonna get rid of the one shelf soon anyway to make room for a wheel! :D

You could always just cut some peices of kd pine wood to lay on top of the shelves! Or put tiles on them. Either way is an easy fix until you can replace them with wooden shelves.
