So, I know there are people out there who just don't understand my love for animals. One of the girls at my work is one such person. "Why do you like them?"

Well, here's my answer in 'living proof' so to speak. After one heck of a craptastic day between work and everything else, I come home to this...

Let me tell you, this cat was the BEST $80 I ever spent. He's so awesomely amazing I can't even begin to describe it. Amusing and playful, yet loving when I need it most.

And Peggy, there's your answer for "Why a cat?" too :neener:

I like animals because of the unconditional love they have. I feel the same way as you when you're having a bad day.

animals only ever really hurt you once, when they die. As I like to say: Some people just don't get it! And they love me for who I am not what they think I should be!

My life wouldn't be complete without all my animal companions! I love them all to death and would never give them up. They are there for you no matter what you look like, they never talk back, and they always cheer you up when you've had a bad day. I really don't understand the people who don't appreciate animals!

I agree! When I was sick recently with a respiratory illness, my cat slept in the crook of my arm every night, and shadowed me everywhere I went when I was awake. He is always lovey and attentive, but it was like he knew I wasn't feeling well and was trying to look after me. :heart3:

When people ask me that question, I just reply, "When was the last time you saw my animal talking behind my back, laughing at me, being mean to me or doing any of the number of things other people do on a daily basis?"

When they can't answer, I tell them, "That's why. My pets love me unconditionally and they're always there to listen when I have a bad day. They don't check their watch every 5 minutes, they don't ignore my calls and they NEVER do something to hurt me intentionally."

It usually shuts people up in a hurry.

I explained to someone a few days ago that I appreciate how animals have the gift of 'forgive and forget'. They do sometimes learn to fear or attack certain things, but they're still far more capable of letting go of sadness or anger, and relearning behaviors, than humans. Look at Michael Vick's pit bulls; 2 are now therapy dogs; 4 or 5 at least are family pets living with other animals; several more have gotten their Canine Good Citizen tags. A human kept in a similarly neglectful and abusive situation would *still* be learning to make eye contact with another person, how to dress themselves and speak on the phone, and trying to forget the past.
