Discussion of the things you would like to try, or have tried and have opinions on. :D

I'd like to try one of those star fruits you see in the store, but fresh and prepared however they're supposed to be served.

I've also been trying to find a place that serves nutria, there's supposedly a pizza place outside of Baton Rouge that makes nutria pizzas. Anyone know where it is? I think it's a truck stop.

Elk, deer and alligator are my favorites so far. Prefer them over beef.

I'm pretty boring when it comes to meat. I like most kinds of seafood, but my meat needs to be the plain old beef, pork, chicken variety.

I am not a fan of game meat. I seem to be able to taste it no matter how they try to hide it. I don't like cornish game hens either - they are nasty. I have tried shark - ick. Tried bear once - double ick. They all just have really weird tastes to me.

I also am not a huge fan of the free range beef out here. Again, it has a weird taste. It's almost like when you're used to regular pop and then you switch to diet. It seems to have that aftertaste.

My mom growing up would eat coon, squirrel, rabbit, pretty much anything because they lived in the depression times. She said you ate what you got. I notice though, she doesn't rush out to eat coon nowadays. :)

I have had star fruits. They aren't bad, but I like pomegranates better. About the only fresh fruit I really don't like are in the melon family. I don't like cantaloupe or honeydew. Love watermelon though.

Tara - what is nutria?

Nutria are like muskrats, but bigger.

I would like to try duck, and rabbit, among other things. I haven't ventured too far out of the beef/chicken/pork range but I'm willing to try it. Lamb is my favorite meat but I rarely get it.

I've had starfruit, it was unremarkable. I've had lychee flavored things, but not an actual lychee - I hear they're good. I also want to try those tiny bananas, the ones that are only like four inches long? Wegmans sells them here but always in bunches of like twenty, I don't know if I want that many. ^^

I used to get these all the time in Ohio! My kids loved them - thought they were made special just for them. :)

Can't you just tear a couple off? They go by the pound, not by the bunch. Rip a couple off and try them.

I made something today that I haven't had in many, many years. My Grandma made this simple dish. Chop onion and bacon and fry it in a frypan, while that's browning chop lettuce in bite sized pieces and add it to the frypan with the bacon and onions when they are cooked to your liking. Stir it until the lettuce is well wilted, 1-2 minutes then and a splash of apple cider vinegar, about 1/2 cup. If you like you can add a spoon or two of sugar so it's not quite so tart. Stir it up and serve it hot right away. It was really good, even my 14 yo son loved it.

Hmm, I'd like to try a fresh Acai berry if I ever get a chance to go to Brazil. I love its unique flavor and recently became addicted to an Acai sorbet I found at Raley's.

As far as unique foods go, I think the most uncommon things I've eaten are raw fish, deer, elk, and crickets... although not all of those are really all that uncommon!

I just recently started eating quinoa (pronounced keen-wa), it's a grain and is prepared the way you prepare rice, we use it as an alternative to rice. It has a real good amount of protien and fiber and I like the way it tastes.

Here's the funny story. Quinoa comes from South America and my parents were born in Ecuador. My mom watches my kids when I work and I had just prepared the quinoa the night before. My mom always eats out of my fridge, so she was curious about the "new" dish and the second she tasted it she called me and asked if it was quiona and I said yes, why, and she told me that she hadn't had it since she was a little girl and that never in her dreams did she think she would ever taste it again! So it brought some good and bad memories of it for her. In my mom's case, she lived in the mountains and they ate quinoa when they didn't have meat, but if its not rinsed properly, which the quinoa that they sell in Whole Foods is pre-rinsed, it can have a soapy and bitter taste to it, so it was a real shock for her to find it in her daughter's fridge 60 years later, LOL!

Oh good lord I am going to sound like a cow, but I can't think of anything I haven't tried! I've eaten buffalo, ostrich, alligator, duck, goose and rattlesnake. I don't care for the duck or goose. I've eaten deep fried calf fries aka rocky mountain oysters and LOVED them. Hey even poop would taste good deep fried and server with milk gravy!
I've had escargot and like them. Lengua (tongue) tacos are delicious! Barbacoa, cheek meat of the cow, delicious!
I've tried almost all fruits and vegetables. I don't care for tomatoes, raspberries, cantaloupe or honeydew. I love kumquats, blood oranges, lychees, and those tiny bananas! Star fruit is just okay. Love mango and papaya!
I don't like liver or green beans. Other than that I think I like everything!
And yes, I even love brussel sprouts!

Theresa what you're talking about sounds a lot like Haluska! onion, bacon and cabbage---yummy!

My husband is from Ecuador and they eat guinea pigs and tapers, but I don't want to try those! He says the food there is amazing though, the steaks are great and cheap and the food has really good sauces. I can't wait to try it. I probably ate some nasty stuff while in China and saw dog but of course would never eat it, or want to know!

I didn't like alligator or deer which are the only weird things I have tried, and I hate cold seafood of any kind. I don't like the gamey taste either or the textures.

I think the oddest things I've had are venison and escargot. I loved the deer, and try and make Ricky come home with some from his parent's house when he goes since they hunt and stock up.

There are some northern US foods I can't find down here. I used to make lox & smear all the time, can't find the lox. Have been craving Welsh rarebit for months. Stouffer's makes it but they don't market it here. Can't get Ellio's or Fluff, either.

I'd love to try some more wild animal meats, since my view of hunting has loosened a little bit, seeing the kind of money it can save.

Yes I have eaten "cuy", only because when I was in Ecuador they lied to me and told me it was chicken and it did taste like chicken!

I'm a very picky person myself - I won't even eat any type of seafood (not even shrimp). I eat deer, but it has to be tenderloin - I've tried BBQ stripped deer meat and deerburger, but I don't like either one. I've tried alligator once before when I was tricked into thinking it was sausage, didn't really like it. I've had squirrel in my stew before, didn't taste any difference in the stew than I would if it was made with chicken or beef. I really want to try escargot and caviar, at least once, but I'm afraid to.

I like to try new things but not in meat. I don't venture far away from chicken, beef or pig. I have tried deer, duck and frog legs once. but side dishes I love to try, fruits, veggies different sauces. I will try things if I don't know what it is. I have had squid once it was very chewy.

Heh we specialize in quinoa. I cook for Penn State, and the dining hall I work at turned entirely healthy last year. I like it, it has a nutty taste, but when you see it everyday it gets old fast. We make a lot of cous cous, bulghar, and a variety of rices as well. I'm responsible for five flavors of hummus daily. Lots of grains, no goodies. =p They took our fryers clean out. =(

If they taste like normal bananas and not like plantains, I think I'm safe getting a bunch! I do like plantains, but it takes some work to get them to taste good.

I love escargot and caviar! I think escargot tastes like cooked mushrooms. I like it cooked in a garlic butter sauce.

I grew up on a farm in Tennessee, so I've eaten some pretty adventurous things. If my grandparents raised it to be eaten, they used as much of it as they could to eat. I've had pork brains and eggs, biscuits with squirrel gravy, fried chitlins, fried fatback, fried beef and chicken liver, livermush, rabbit stew... Most of it I would not eat as an adult, but I ate it as a kid because we ate what we were served.

I would like to try quinoa. I'm not sure Chris would eat it, but I may have to get some the next time I'm at Whole Foods.

ETA: Bailey, we can get lox here at Sam's. If you have a membership, look at the one in Bristol. Otherwise, I can bring you some when I'm coming through that direction. I love it!

I just read through the whole thread and I don't think there's too many things listed here that I haven't already tried. I'm almost embarrassed.. but why should I be..? I'm just adventurous.. ;)

Growing up on a farm in GA ...we ate what was put in front of us.. or we didn't eat. Pretty simple. With that said, I don't like raccoon or opossum cuz it's greasy and stringy.. the texture just icks me out ..blah! Sweet breads are not something I enjoy cuz I mostly had to help round up the calves ..and hold 'em while Daddy or one of the other men/boys cut 'em. Same for pigs.. I was the catcher and holder.. while the torture was carried out. Yikes!

I love to try new fruits ..and veggies ...and different ethnic cuisine. I am a huge fan of sushi.. and always sit near the "chef" ..so I can try all the adventurous stuff he passes over to me

I would like to try some Nutria pizza, though. That sounds pretty interesting, actually. I wonder if I can get someone to FedEx me some meat ..I can make my own pizza..

:)

If you do, they sell it in the bulk foods section as well, the boxed ones are expensive and the bulk is the same quinoa that way you could get a small amount to see if you actually like it. :))

I'm not a game meats fan, but I really should have duck or goose at least once. Never ate pheasant or quail either, since my father stopped hunting when I was little. I'm not a venison fan, though; bad experience with poorly prepared homemade deer sausage turned me off to it forever, even though I've had good *clean* tenderloin and burger since then. Opossum and Raccoon were both nasty when I had it; way too greasy and the texture was a turn off. Beefalo, however, was excellent, as was the Ostrich burger I had several years ago. The weirdest thing I have eaten and enjoyed was squid or octopus meat at a Hibachi place. Had no idea I was eating it until I realized there was a suction cup in my salad. (And then I kept eating.)

I should probably make sure I taste persimmon and cumquat though. I don't remember whether I've had those or not. I also need to get more experimental with mushrooms. Generally I stick with wild or farmed whites and portabella/baby bellas, but there are so many more out there that look like what my "pick it an' eat it" father told me never to touch, I can't bring myself to eat Crimini or Oyster mushrooms and the like yet.

(Btw, you're not missing much with the star fruit really; I found it way too tart and I usually don't bat an eye over sour stuff. Definitely need to have a fresh mango if you never have, though. It's worth $2.50/each!)
